at what point in the map design do you start adding in the cinimatic sequences? is it when you reach the point where the cinimatic would be, or when you're done completely aside, or whatnot? and if not when you get there, what are good ways to make 'placeholders' for cinimatics?

You can do the work in the oreder that makes best to you. A good idead can be start thinking of cinematic once u start the terrain work: what kind of terrain do I need? how will i make it to get the best result? do i need things such as hills, borders of forests and such? It's a good idead make the terrain very good in the cinematic areas because cin seq offer more time to look at the terrain.
I use to work with camera angels when I'm making the very terrain, and i make the triggers later. But, as i said, do it your own way:D .
