Best way to move special effects?

I've been doing a lot of custom spells, and one problem that continues to bother me is that of movable special effects.

As far as I can tell, other than attaching it to a unit, there is no way to move a special effect. (unless they've changed that in between RoC and TFT - I am still much more comfortable with RoC mapping than TFT) This forces me to use invulnerable Units as special effects. The side effect is that they can be selected (an eyesore), and units create vastly more lag than special effects.

Another method is to edit the death animation to a very short duration, such as 0.02 seconds, and to create and destroy the special effect many times a second. Again, this creates a lot of CPU and memory load.

Is anyone aware of a better way to make moving spell effects?

Also, on a unrelated note, what is the best way to detect a unit actually being attacked? The "Unit is Attacked" trigger seems to fire at the beginning of the attack animation, not when the attack actually connects.

For the special effect thing, try creating an invisible unit and place it on him. But if it's something like an aura or permanent thing, then I dunno. >.>

If you give that invisible unit the "Unknown(Aloc)" Ability, like the Locust it won't be selectable, and won't show on the minimap.
