Come On Be Honest - Custom Sounds Don't Work!

well this isn't really an answer...but did you try copying the wendigo or whatever and giving him the tauren model/icon?

My head is a patchwork of bandages. You know, from beating it
against the wall.

I am seriously beginning to think that for everyone who has
claimed to have had success with changing one unit's sound to
another's, you'll find someone with local directories enabled.

Heh. I've tried everything to get a default Orc Tauren to sound
like a Neutral Hostile Wendigo:

I've tried in the Sound Editor - Use Internal Sound, with the
Tauren's sounds pointing to the Wendigo's. No go. In the Sound
module when I double click on the Tauren's sounds it works fine and emits the Wendigo sounds, but when I run the game it doesn't work.

I've added UnitSound to my UnitMetaData.slk file, and changed the Tauren's UnitSound to Wendigo. No go.

On GoldenUrg's advice I then added my custom UnitMetaData.slk to my map. Not only no go, but it had the unfortunate effect of
disconnecting my test partner, every time, no matter what we tried. When it was removed from the map, the map worked fine.

Turin Turambar claimed that he got custom sounds to work by altering the UnitUI.slk file and adding it to a map. When I used Excel to edit a local copy of UnitUI.slk (UnitSound for Tauren changed to Wendigo) and added it, no go.

Could it be my use of the compressed ('a') add instead of
uncompressed ('A') with mpq2k? I tried it both ways with the
UnitUi.slk method, and neither worked.

And for the record, yes, I've successfully exported the Wendigo
sounds to .wav files and then added them back to my map as the
Tauren sound files. This worked great. My Tauren sounded exactly like a Wendigo. But my map was now 1 Mb larger. Heh heh. I don't know about you, but I play with a lot of 56 Kbps users. I doubt if they'd appreciate having to wait an extra 3-5 minutes for the map to download.

Anyway, come on. Admit it. No one's really managed to get custom sounds to work without using local directories by changing the UnitSound field, have they?

I read about someone claiming to have spoken with a Blizzard
employee about their being a bug in the Sound module. Like, we
were supposed to have been able to change the unit sounds and that it would be fixed in an upcoming patch. God I hope so, because there doesn't seem to be any other way outside of super large maps.

Oh, and if I'm completely wrong and someone HAS managed to change a unit's sounds to another without adding .wav's to a map...please, Please, PLEASE have compassion on my obtuse self and enlighten me. I would severely appreciate it. I would appreciate it so much it would hurt.

Care.

Supposedly, yes, the new patch coming out will let us do that. If you really wanted to, you could you could crete a custom unit based of a tauren and change the model. That changes it, but probably not the way you wanted. Oh well, maybe bliz will help us out sometime.
