Ok, I can skin. So it's not that good. I'm not working with Paintshop or whatever, 'cos it's wwaaay to expensive, so I use a paint program already on my computer, called Arcsoft Photostudio 2000. Anyway, I do the skin, save it as blp, but whatever method I try, if it's with Notepad and a .bat extension or WinMpq, nothing works! the .bat extension method says 'write the unit's path', but whenever I do that, it says 'bad command or filename'. And WinMpq doesn't even open.

Please help, I want to get into the world of skinning.

You have to use Warcraft 3 Viewer to export the tga file and then make the tga file a blp fle again. Also make sure you use the correct path.

was a poll really needed? And im not fully understanding your problem. Are you saying that the skin won't show on the modle or that you can't import it or something... What ever it is ill walk you through how i skin.

First the skin image (be it off a previous one or not) then save it as a .tga (highest quality) Then use yobguls converter (found at this site) and convert the skin into a .blp

Second use Winmpq to open the war.mpq file. At the top type in .mdx and it will show all mdx file. Select the modle you want to go with the skin and export it.

third use yobgul's converter again and convert the .mdx file you just exported into a .mdl, then open the mdl with note pad. Scroll down a little and you'll see a image link to the modles original skin, replace the last two parts where it says the name of the skin to the name of yours (make sure the last one has the .blp at the end) then highlight that text you just fixed (between the quotation marks) and hit ctrl+C to copy it.

fourth use yobgul's converter and convert your modiefied mdl file back to a .mdx, then import the skin you made and the .mdx file you modified into the game. Then make sure the skins path is what's in the mdx file (hit ctrl+V to copy the exact pathing). And your done!

there is much simpler:

-once your skin is saved as .blp,
import it in the warcraft 3 editor.

-double click on it, and change the path to the full path of the skin you want to replace.

done.

Desty that way is terrible. What if you don't *want* to replace any original skins?? What if you want them seperate...

Oh and I have a bootlegged copy of Adobe Photoshop 6.0 :D but my skins still suck because im not the most skilled at details.

desty's way is best for discovering if a skin works, flat out, and it's also best for overall map size, if you don't need the original skin.

However, it doesn't address his problem. strung's solution does, but it's more work than you need to do.

Get a program that can save as .tga. Get War 3 Viewer. Extract the original skin of the unit from war3.mpq or war3x.mpq (whichever is appropriate). Convert the skin from .blp to .tga using War 3 Viewer. Open the .tga skin in the program that can save as .tga (Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro are popular around here for that. I know Photoshop at least has a downloadable demo version).

Monkey around with the skin all you want, but make sure you save it as a .tga with 32 bit compression, for best and least-corruptable results.

Convert it from a .tga back to a .blp with War 3 Viewer and insert it in your map with the Import Editor, using the path of the old skin. Also place the file in your Warcraft III\ directory under the same path (i.e. Warcraft III\Textures\skin.blp). It should replace the original skin both in the WE and in-game.

If that doesn't work, write us again and give a step-by-step recounting of your process.

That's the problem, I can't get Winmpq. Well, I've got it, but it won't open. And I downloaded it from this site.

Maybe I'll try desty's idea. I won't do it right now, 'cos I deleted something important in the wc3 folder and it won't open, so I'm installing TFT (again), but this isn't so bad when you guys finally showed me my path.

My dark path is open. Me no sound like Yoda, do I?

EDIT: By the way, I have no problems importing the skin and saving it as tga. I have Wc3 image extracter for that.

It doesn't do anything when I download. If I click 'Next', then it says Error: No files to extract.
