Hi, i'm working on a small mod using everything from Warcraft 2 and i was wondering if there is an easy way to get the icons in War2 (buildings, spells, unit portrait), copyed so i can make the .blp/.mdx/.mdl file. I tried using the Print Screen button but all i get are outlines. Any help? |

There are no model files in Warcraft 2, it's not a 3D game. You can extract the unit "portraits" (they're actually just the buttons you click to build/train them), but they are in .grp format and I've been unsuccessful in finding a .pal file to work with them. Your best bet for these things is to take screenshots of them, cut them out, and do all the things to conert them to the WC3 style command buttons. Good luck. EDIT: As you can see by my avatar, that's the Warcraft II "Haul Oil" button that I converted to a Wacraft III command button using the above method. |

I've tried that but all i get is black with white outlines. Is there a good program to a way to make it windowed? EDIT: here is what happens when i take a screenshot of warcraft 2:tides Of Darkness ![]() |

I think adding -window works. Haven't tried it with WC2 though. |

no, you can't do window mode with WC2 If you have W2 BNE edition, i think it uses MPQs now, so use WinMPQ If you have W2 vanilla edition, use WarDraft to extract files (music, WAVs, text, font, etc.) from the .WAR files on your installation CD, because the harddisk ones are just dummy files. But the pictures seem to be in RAW format and I get an error when opening it with IrfanView, so use virtual x86 software (e.g. Bochs) to emulate a computer, install DOS in it, install Warcraft II in it, run the game, then Print Screen SysRq. |

i figured that the war2 bnet editon would have it, so i check it out. But the only thing is all the filenames are Unknownxx (xx being # and letter), and it doesn't give a file extention :( |

It's true that Warcraft 2 BNE has all the files in an MPQ. But as I said, the "portraits" as they are called in WC2 are not in a normal viewable format. They are a .GRP file, and you need a corresponding .PAL file so that their colors are correct. Omega, in order to see the actually files and not "Unknown", you have to download a listfile. Search for it on Google. |

If you don't have Bnet edition, you'll need Wardraft, use google to search it |

I got the list file and i extracted all the files. but the problem ism how can i tell what files is the GRP file? btw i got the GRP convertor from starcraft, which should work with War2 |

Okay, I'm going to break it down ONE MORE TIME. 1. The file you are looking for is portraits.grp. All the icons are in this one file. 2. The StarCraft .GRP converter requires you to load a specific .PAL (Pallete) file that corresponds with the .GRP you want to open. If you don't have the right .PAL file, the icons will have all sorts of weird colors. I'm not talking out of my *** here, this is from personal experience. 3. When you hit "Print Srcn"in Warcraft II BNE, DO NOT try to paste the image into an image editing program. It creates a .tga file in your Warcraft II BNE directory in a folder called Screenshots. You can use IrfanView or PhotoShop to convert it to a format that you can edit. |

LOL @ element_5: Don't you just love it when people ignore you and continue the discussion. :) |

Heh, I just figure it will come back to nip them in the bud when they figure it out, lol |
