Here are the current reviews for Part 1 of "The Tale of Archon" Feel free to post your own reviews here :ggani: Current Overall Score: 93.5% ============================================== Mech-Sheep: Terrain: A - It was damn good! Music: A - Perfect timing! I love how the music was on the whole time. Tell me how to take off that stupid Warcraft default music on the background! Story: B+ - It was pretty normal, but this is only part 1. I would prefered more of some information and such. Effects: A+ - It's impeccable! Overall: A = 9/10 - BEAUTIFUL CINEMATIC, but now I'm going to have to enhance my own cinematic ============================================== DaemonKillar: DK approved :) Alright, Here's my 10 pages long review: First of all I really want to congratulate you, it's been a long time since I've seen something of that level. Well in fact (no offense to anybody), I believe it is actually the first time . Strangely, watching this really made my day: it just gave me even more interest in finishing my own COTN. When you're all alone to do something in particular, you don't really feel the need to improve(which is really a major problem), and when you don't bring anything new, you quickly lose interest. But since I saw this, I quickly told myself "Alright, what he has done is pretty amazing and of my level, now I must do as he did and do better with the stuff he brought" (You probably told yourself something similar before doin this cin ). So I thought of new stuff I could add to COTN 5 which quickly reanimated this nearly lost "passion". As a result, you just gave me what I needed to regain interest so I'd like to thank you for that. Also, since I believe you're very talented, I'll have you become a mod of this forum if you desire. I'll also make a public announcement on the COTN webpage and will try and get one on the wc3c news so people realize i'm not the only one that can do good cinematics. Ask Skull to get a forum for your project, that's what gave life to COTN actually so it should be the same for TTOA. k enough with the announcements, here's the review! Terrain: It was really good and high quality. I really liked the forest, it had a good amount of details and you did as I told: "Use my stuff and make it better"(Altought I wanted to keep that tree model for myself, greedy bitch eh? ) There are still some flaws I noticed. it's mainly the city that looks too... unnatural. It lacked details compared to the forest and they both contrasted a lot during the cin. Other than that, I can tell you used the new FT environment doodads really well! Terrain Grade - 85% Story: Well it's an introduction, so it doesn't really tell much and that's normal. Still, it starts quite abruptly. Something that sounded odd was the captain's speech when they attacked, it sounded really desperate when he hadn't even seen anything from the enemy. I woulda freaked out if I had such a pessimistic captain to lead me IMO . Despite this minor problem, the events really went on smoothly and remained interesting. That battle was really displayed perfectly! Story Grade - 90% Cameras: You made a really good use of them, especially when the attack began, it made the scene look really panicking! The forest shots were also enjoyable I would say. Yet, there is once again a minor problem: When you move around the city and in the forest, the camera movements are just not fluid enough. They abruptly change direction and kinda break the mood you gave to the scene. Like, one cam goes slowly, then when you issue another cam it just speeds up. Try and correct that in a future update Cameras Grade - 90% Music and SFX: Wellt hat was pretty much near perfection, I don't have much more to say about that. You're one of those that understood it's all about music and sound effects Music and SFX Grade - 99% (nothing is prefect ) **Note I had 3 white fade out and back in at the beginning. There was probably something to show up there (Something announcing TTOA). Yet, it showed white screens. The problem was probably because your texture size wasn't in conformity with most 3D cards standard resolutions(Short, it wasnt a multiple of 32). You might want to fix that too. Now, I'll explain what I meant with "Take my stuff and make it better/add more to it". Basically, COTN gave the tools and ideas to use in order to make an above average cinematic. Yet, the idea is to always go deeper and find new ideas while still using the old ones. So here are the major ideas you brought I could notice: - Reskin a unit when it is wounded (That Arthas that got rocked, pretty good idea there) - Have different skins for every villager (major plus when you don't have much in the town, helps with variety and credibility) - Customized weapon sound effects! (the blademaster scene , that was really cool BTW) Note to some people around I kinda find it insulting to see people forget so easily when they find something better. I personally don't really appreciate the term "COTN killer", it sounds as if you just ignore what I brought to the cinematic community. Please remember most of the cin projects around would never have come to life if I hadnt been here (I'm not telling you should all eternally bow in front of me, I'm just asking for a minimum of recognition please ) This sentence I prefer to take as a joke(which is the case, but looks unclear) left me quite... let's say... confused: No, hes not your rival, your time is over, hes your successor. That quite discouraging to hear as Iron Ian's project is just going to make my own even more alive. Please call it something else like "COTN Rival" or sumthin like that. Keep it clean please so we can continue to have fun while having some of this friendly rivalry In conclusion this Cinematic is definitely DK Approved and deserves this award of excellence ![]() ============================================== Trav Ah yes! This definetly has kicked the limbo bar down a notch. This cinematic has a very eye-catching and fluid approach to it, and it will take a lot of effort to beat it. I could tell just by looking through your Imports that this must have taken 2-3 weeks to create (if not more). +Atmosphere: This is a very comprehensive aspect that I consider the most important to any map. It encompasses story, terrain, enviornment settings, doodad placement, and so on. The first thing I looked for in the editor were those trees. Fur Trees - very nice! The doodads made it seem like a completely unique tileset. +Dialogue: Few spelling/grammatical errors. Most of the text had a sense of purpose about it that didn't bloat the plot. The only thing that detracted, very minimally at that, was an overuse of establishment shots in the beginning. 10/10 ============================================== Undead-Swarm Exellent job! Nice!! 10/10 on special effects, very well done - I love the evil mage >:) 9.9/10 on the skins, the archers was a litle too white for me >:) 10/10 on the camera work, the fading was perfect, it reminded me of some parts in LotR >:) 100/10 on the battle, VERY KEwLLll~!!1 Overall: 129.9/10 - Nicely done, *clap clap* ============================================== Zotax So heres my review: Terrain: Yea pretty good, not the best ive seen, the outdoors had an interesting use of the rock tilesets instead of grass, cant think of whether i like it or not. Story: Seems alright, like DK said its an introduction so not much has been revealed. Dialoug is overall good but has a few moments when it sounds forced and unnatural. IMO try to avoid quick succesions of short sentences. Cinematography: Battle scene was really cool, I suggest for the next part doing something like that, but on a much larger scale, im talking like 4 times what you had. A full blown siege or battle in the planes would just own (take a lot of work, but be worth it). I could just image in far overhead shot or the close up of two opposing heroes fighting amidst the two armies.... Yea like DK try to make the camera movement smoother, SFX/Music/Skins: Definantly the best part. The mage battle owned, almost as much as the undead bloodmage skin did. Having many multiple skins of characaters, even if there only minor changes from the original skin really make a map seem much better. I didnt notice sound much, but thats because I wasnt concentrating on it much, but the few things that did stand out (the music, spell voices and weapon hit sound) were good. Overal very GJ, looking forward to the next part. ============================================== divinesage Fantastic work Ian! Terrain: This is very beautiful. The trees all blend in properly with the background and the ground. Maybe the trees should be a little brown since there was a drought. I'll give this a 9/10. Storyline: Mmmmm. Very nice beginning. The peaceful rain, and then suddenly we're right in a heated battle. A little too sudden for the beginning though. However can't really tell how the plot will progress since this is the first part. 8/10 Music: Good ambience that matches the scenery. Especially the forests. Definitely one of the best. 10/10 but as DK says nothing is perfect so 9.99999/10 Special Effects: This ones an eyefull. Very nice. The orc killing the Lord. The Captain dashing past himand the mage battle were all awesome. 9.99999/10 again :D Overall: Very nice and good work even for Part 1. Good Job! 9.5/10 Keep it up II(Iron_Ian)! ============================================== |

Well I just felt it would be good to contribute my 2 cents worth. To begin with, this cinematic is really good. However, it could be better. Thus in the Ant review system, points are not given, only deducted. Terrain: This just kind of flowed through naturally. No flaws spotted. I can't deduct anything on terrain cause the terrain just looked... liked it should... going away unnoticed yet enhancing the experience. Minus NOTHING Music: Really excellent. The music leads through suspense... sorta-peaceful, and all that stuff. I can say it was perfect cause it had no flaws. However, a more orchastric feel in the battle would help. Minus nothing again Camera: Music and camera is where TToN really shines. I especially loved the fade filters and the "Heart beating" sounds. Unfortunately, though there were many different cameras to entertain us and break the monotony of staying in one camera for too long, it was kinda irritating when the camera broke off the flow by going too fast or slow. Minus 1 Battle (overall): The battle was well organised - in terms of camera and all... the camera knew where it was supposed to go. Unfortunately, it sort of lacked a sense of "feel". Many footmen were running around trying to get to the frontline instead of maybe... defending, raising their shields, and ready to advance forward to take the places of their fallen comrades. Also, more grunts! It looked like only 4 grunts were attacking or something! Minus 3 Battle (special): Since the battle was so big a part, I figured I should break it out into those "special" 1 to 1s, and the overall. Firstly, the LordWadshisname VS Evil Blademaster. When Mr Evil Blademaster is hit, he jerks back, half dead, then snaps back again. It's irking and quite unnatural. Instead, have him DODGE. So he isn't hit and you don't have to do that animation-of-jerkiness. Of course, if you could find a way to smoothen the animation, all the better. The Guy-On-Horse kill Mr Evil Blademaster was much better. Of course, you could focus on the killing blow... slow down a lot... zoom camera and stuff... MATRIX STYLE! Anyway the killing was excellent. Then there was evil mage vs good guy-on-stag. The use of special effects and the spells were EXCELLENT! However, camera here was repetitive and kinda boring at times... try to capture the essence of the action more... it's already done, just do it MORE. (btw battle camera isn't part of the camera section). Minus 3 Total rating: 43/50 -- I know I know I'm a little less giving than you people... but the best is always yet to be, so don't give excellent marks yet. Plot & stuff: I didn't rate this cause it's the slow start... but anyways... I couldn't help feeling this sense of "I've seen this somewhere before... hmmm". - Evil Army popping up unexpectedly to kill village? Hmmm?? - Guard acting like a bitch and not letting someone see an important person even if it's a matter of high importance... familiar no? Also, don't make him stop to say he's exhuasted... just make him walk slowly... CONVEY that exhuastion visually. Stupid questions just to end off: 1) Near the end of the play, if he was dead exhuasted, how come he could lift his big sword in the air and shout? 2) If the footmen were still blocking the entrance how come there were already fights in the village/city/town? 3) What's the use of a gate if it's just waiting to be broken down? Couldn't they like pour boiling oil on the orcs or something? |

Wow thanks for that review :ggani: Very nice and in depth like DKs. Oh yeah and you think its like COTN? BTW wait till later parts when you see the motives of the big bad evil guy. It will be quite a bit different then the traditional evil dude... Well I don't really care if it is. I started this story 1 year ago working on an Age of Empires II RPG (which I scrapped btw) The story developed a bit since then but it had the same basic idea: A guy (now Alpheus, but originally gonna be Darius, and the captain of the guard was gonna be (forget his name, scrapped it and moved to one of the other characters later in TTOA)) sees the orc army. He freaks out. He runs to the city. The guard is a bitch and doesn't let him in. He talks to the captain of the guard. (I had nothing planned on how the orcs were going to get there until just recently when i was working on the part) The orcs slaughter the city. Darius escapes (originally I planned to have Alpheus, and a few people escape but decided against it) Darius says he will avenge the people of Shinengua. EDIT: Also thanks for your comments about the battle. I may do the matrix like cam when Darius hits the BM, and also the BM may dodge Lord Morren's last blow. The thing with the footmen crowding around the gate will definitely be fixed. I'm going to create some orcs inside the city with triggers, so it makes it look like they got inside, which is supposed to happen. Also dialogue is going to be majorly revamped. Darius will be slower moving in his animations (like holding up his sword) I will try to characterize the characters a bit more (except the guard cause he is fine as he is :ggani: ) Iron_Ian |

Don't forget that using famous special effects like Matrix might cause the cinematic to become unoriginal. |

Ohhh yess the blademaster matrix..Dat really did made it unordinary. And da story really wants me to play the campaign. |

My favorite parts about cinematic: -The matrix part when the blade master part kills off the swordsman. -Skins..Very impressive. (http://wcwarehouse.omgasl.com) -Changing the guyz look. (I forgot the guyz name but) I love how hes perfectly normal at first and u changed the model towards his bloody look. -The Dark mages FX! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Things that could have been better.. -While doing the matrix part the camera should have moved into a better bloodier finish. -How did the horse die? -Lame Words! Darkmage:MUAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH (Why:It gets annoying. What kind of bad guy has a script like MUAHAHAHAHAHAH 2 times?) Darkmage:Im your death FOOL! (Fool?..Y not another more EVIL thing..WarcraftiiiFT is Rated TEEN) Daruis (Or something):NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! (Nooooooooo?..Hmm No! or HOW DARE YOU KILL MY COMRADES could have been better) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Conclusion: I cant create Cinematics as good as urs and cant wait for the campaign to come out! Overall: -Storyline: A -FX: A+ -Acting: B+ (Scripts for characters) -Overall: A |

So now anytime someone uses a freeze camera it is a rip off the matrix? I'm pretty sure it has been used b4 in other movies. |

My review. When i downloaded this all i expected was another warcraft cinema, On par or less than CoTN, but i got more than i expected out of this one. Camera - 8.5 The camera work here was pretty nice, especailly the times with black rims centering it, but otherwise there wasn't as great as a variety, however it was good enough Battles - 9.7 I liked how the battle scenes were done, Like with the blademaster and the mage battle, the battles went by fast but they were very good. Skins/Models - 8.9 Some of the skins like the bloodmage weren't as great, others had flaws (what the hell was darius's second set of eyebrows?) but most were high qaulity and with high detail. Music - 10 The music of this map was great in my opinon, i'm using headphones (A good pair :)) and the music sounded alot like actual movies, even though it was taken from some (I would geuss, i cant name the movie(s) though) the sounds too were good, like the orcs hurrah Story - 9.2 I liked how the story was built but it was difficult to decide who was the main character, i thought the mage would be but it was darius, Though the lack of explaination was annoying certain parts were much much better, the footmans speech however, did sound like oh so many movies, the endscene was good, but parts seemed left out, and might be explaned later (IE, the king?) Overall - 92.6 Very good cinema, professinal and i cant wait to see the next part :) |

Double eyebrows? Hmm never really noticed that, Arthas looks like that too I think. *Runs off to edit alpha channels* Quote:
Hehe, I'm still planning to add more sounds in that part 0_o The music was from Braveheart. Quote:
Hmm perhaps I should explain things a bit more. The footmans speech may be changed to be a bit more inspiring rather then fancilly saying "We're gonna die!" The end will be about 40 seconds more added on to the end (something special :)) The King? Damn I need to update the history section a bit more. In the final version things should be a bit more understandable (especially if you read the history, which I am still working on) Also Darius isn't actually the main character emote_sweat Archon is the main character, and you will meet him in Part 2. Darius plays a very important role in it however... hehehe. Think of Part 1 as more of a background, a cin to kinda begin the mystery and intrigue of the plot. Perhaps I should change it around a bit so as to make it give much more info on the current events of Dale, etc... (kinda like LOTR's) intro. Part 2 begins the "true" Tale of Archon. Iron_Ian |

Just saw it and I would certainly put it in the same level as CotN. My reasons : First off, the cinematic was just really fluid and I wasn´t bored once. The music was beautifully timed, and animations were great. Loved how the skin changed when Darius got hurt. Another thing I noticed, is that there are no spelling errors or grammatical errors. I found alot of them in CotN which kinda gives it a rushed look, but even so, the two cinematics are awesome. Anxious for part 2 :D |

Thank you. Actually there were a few grammer (Theres an error in this post though, can you find it?) errors, but they were very hard to find. They'll all be fixed in the final version of part 1 though :ggani: |

grammer /= grammar Btw, when will the new part be released? |

I will either release Part 2, 3, and 4 together. Or I will release the entire series when I am finished with it. Part two is about 55% done, hopefully I will have it done by the end of November at latest. |

Great touch with the chanting before the spells were cast, Loved it. Almost as good as CotN. can't wait till part 2! |

I loved COTN and i loved this, very inspiring stuff A lot of time well spent :foot: Can't wait for part 2, but don't rush it now, as they say: "Art takes time" :ggani: |
