This thread has been posted for discussion of the MDX Exporter Petition. What is the MDX Exporter Petition? Here is a link below for you to learn about it.

The MDX Exporter Petition

Well, on my opinion, an MDX Exporter created by blizzard would be useful. However, in my opinion, I think that petition has gone a little far. Comments like Blizzard being obligated to create such a tool is unnecessary. Maybe you people here at WC3Cs, as far as you have come as it is, could take a crack at it? Anyway, other things like mentioning providing 3DS Max 4, which I myself have used before for modelling. Yes, I admit, it is hard to do, but come on, its 3D graphics we're talking about, how easy can it get? Of course yes, I suppose it could get down to an easier level such as Bryce 5 or something, but still, you cant expext it to be as easy as Photoshop or Paint. 3DS Max 4 is a very expensive program, Blizzard cant just provide it to WC3 players.

And as for people who would like to use 3DS Max for modelling, but dont have the money to pay for it; are afraid of paying for it, then being greatly disappointed; or dont have the time or internet connection to download it over KaZaA, iMesh, Kazaa Lite K++, Limewire, WinMX, etc.; then here is a link to a similar tool based on 3DS Max called GMax. I picked this up along the way of trying to model for TES III: Morrowind (Which, by the way, is even harder) on fileplanet. Anyway, I hope this helps...

Gmax 1.2

This is free, so dont worry, and it is pretty much just like 3DS Max. Its also smaller, too, for all you people are saying, "What if I dont have enough space, memory, or processor speed to use GMax?".

Well that is about all i have to say about this issue. Any comments?

As Blizzard still hasnt released the mdx exporter, i can honestly say i dont think we will ever get it. For many reasons im sure, i cant think of any; other than one upping them but im sure it has something to do with a certain pride and will to have ones own unique filetype.

Now i dont say its impossible that when Warcraft3 is abandonware for example we -might- get it, but well, you get my point.

There is hope that said. The DEX project. Support them a little more as its already done wonders for the community.

I hate these things... I signed it the first time i heard of it before i realized how stupid a petition like this is... If you can't figure out why they don't release it then you havn't thought about it enough... I can list a few reasons..

1) They use 3ds Max... Everyone knows that most people steal 3ds Max so why would blizzard provoke the stealing community.

2) Did you ever think that maybe Blizzard didn't make the exporter??? Instead they bought a license for the use of it... If that is true which i don't really know then for them to release it with the game they would have to buy a license for each and every person that bought the game... Meaning Raised game prices.

3) Also imagine this "Model Maddness" this would be the new Winter Maul... People would spam crappy models and fill up maps up to there max bnet size of 4mb making it so no one can easily download it.

Well look how far the modding community of StarCraft has come, now I can easily re-do team colors, make square tile, and stack buildings, ect.

Give WC3 two more years and you'll be seeing many, many custom maps with new models..

4mb isnt that much, just takes like 20 seconds to dl...

I agree with the petition, Blizzard should and is obligated to provide a tool for modelling with .mdx.

They really should, *signing petition right now*

Ha 20 seconds you don't know how bnet is run... They cap your bandwith on there servers so you can't transfer at your full speed.. Or else when you think that the normal map now is at max 500k... I could download maps instantly instead it takes a while and if you don't have a lot of custom things the maps are only 100 k now thatz 20 seonds on a dialup connection do dl... yet it takes them 1 minute. So yea its not a whole lot but considering most people on bnet are on a 56k connection and bnet caps you its not that ez to download large map files... Now there is the random times you get full speed proly because no one is on buti'm not sure the exact reason why that happens.

Blizzard states in their editors, that they do NOT support the editor in any way. What you do with it is your problem. Yes they have faq's, but they are simply lame :P The editor is a GIFT for us, and we have NO reason to say that they are obligated to make one for us. Get a grip...

The exporter has nothing to do with the editor. . .

(I think)

COOLer
the main reason the did not give us an expoter is we could then make an inporter form the scoce code then steal their models! In MAX Form then bacily sell them as work we did cause how many people own wc3 and would check to see if it was a rip of that.

i agree. the same issue was with .mpq, they created their own archive that they expected to be secure, but now we have WinMPQ and TechMPQ etc. that we can use to view and export all the files within. im not saying that is a bad thing, but blizzard's idea of having their own file-types gets pretty useless once intelligent people step in and learn how to get into them, make an explorer for them, and let all of the blizzard community do what they please with them. for instance, before i knew of WinMPQ or even played online, i learned i could extract the cinematics from the MPQ's in the movie folder by just using windows movie maker. then i could just save it as a .wmv and watch it when i please. i wont get into as to how, because there is a certain way you have to do it to avoid errors.

oh yea, and, as for gmax, i just remembered. unless there is a file converter out there or something, you can only edit .gmax files with gmax. speaking of modeling tools, any suggestions as to what i should use to edit them? i have been having troubles with my 3ds max lately.......
