i know u ppl will prbably say this question has been answered before, but it seems every tutorial o far has just avoided it.

I want to make a new skin for the orginal grunt model. i already have the skin made, but applying it is my problem. i want to be able to apply my own skin to a copied model without just overwriting a texture in my MPQ. i want to be able to use both the normal grunt skin and my own skin at the same time for 2 separate units. i also want the skin to be able to be seen in game online by other people who download the map play it. get what im trying to say? i hope you can help.... :bgrun:

you have to edit the model file, convert it to an mdl, then edit the skin path using notepad, then change it back to and mdx, then import it into your map, and import the new skin into your map using w/e pathname u put in the mdl file, and then reload ur map and voila! 2 grunts

Not only has it been answered before, it's on the first page of the forum!

If you have any problems with the information there, ask away. Although I recommend you ask in that thread, to keep the discussions concurrent.

okay, so i followed your instructions and this is how it went. i didnt edit the model in like 3ds max or something if that is what you meant, so i went to the next step. i converted it to an mdl using War3FileConverter. then i changed the skin path to "(Custom)\Units\GoldenGrunt.blp" (now does there have to be a file in my war3.mpq called GoldenGrunt.blp under (Custom)\Units\ for this to work? because i never added it to the mpq) and then saved it. i then converted it back to an mdx like u said. then i imported them into a test map like u said. this is how it looked under the files' pathnames:

War3mapimported\GoldenGrunt.mdx
War3mapimported\GoldenGrunt.mdl
(Custom)\Units\GoldenGrunt.blp
(war3mapimported\ was the default, and u never said to change it, so i left it alone. i also added both the edited .mdl and .mdx just in case)

then i added a new unit and changed the model of it to the imported model. i reloaded my map, then ran into my first problem when trying to put the unit on the map. at the bottom of the map it said "Could not load file (or model, whatever it said): War3MapImported\Goldenrunt.mdl". the unit was displayed as a green-and-black checkard cube. this really pissed me off. when i get pissed off i try changing things around and testing to see if they work. i then changed all of the pathnames of the imported files to (Custom)\Units\(Whatever File). of course, this didnt work. i get te same "could not load" error. then to see if i did have to add the files to my war3.mpq, i tried adding them to it under my previous pathname (the reason i never added them before was because i didnt think that they had to be in there, because if when someone else downloads the map, nothing would add to their war3.mpq corresponding to the model, so i thought that it wouldnt have to be in mine either, or would it?) then of course something bad happens and my WinMPQ doesnt let me add the files to war3.mpq. i recieve no errors what-so-ever, it just acts as normal as if the file was added, but they were nowhere to be found. once again pissed off, i figured that maybe there was some kind of glitch and tried opening the map again anyway. then, as i expected, something went wrong and i once again get the same "could not load" error. okay, now that i am done telling my story, think you know where i went wrong?

Could you not simply have it set at the path for the Chaos (Fel) Orc Grunt? It's the same model, just a different file, so the skin would work, and it would be alot easier than .MDL editing.

well, no, because the space fel orc is in fact not the same model. last i checked, the regular grunt doesnt hold a gun. what im shooting for here is a new skin applied to a copied grunt model. anyway, ive been looking for help on this for a long time now, longer than a have ever spent looking for answers in forums. u ppl sure theres no way u can help? scroll up a bit in this thread, read my book, and see if i went somewhere wrong. i know i did something wrong, i just dont know what.

okay this is wat i got done. i was able to add my skin and copied model to my war3.mpq. as you can see i got the new skin to work throught the mpq, but not through the imported one. only problem is, i dont think that when users download the map they will be able to get the skin.

the center grunts are the grunts with my skin. all i really did was change the silver trim to gold, as can be seen in the lower-center grunt. the top grunt not as well. i also tried addin alpha channels to the bracers for team color. the gold trim of the captains on the left are what i was going for on my grunt. the grunts on the right are normal. as for that damnable green-black checkard cube? yea, thats my problem. thats the 'grunt' with my imported skin

btw, if that image wasnt displayed, then download it at the bottom of that post

The *Easiest* way to get two different-skinned grunts working is to simply import your new grunt skin and put it at the path "Textures/ChaosGrunt.blp" in the map. This will not affect the original grunt in any way, but it will replace the skin of the red grunt (The unit can be found as "Orc->Campaign->Units->Fel Orc Grunt" in the world editor.) with your new one. If you're going to use the red grunt for something else, and want a third one, just ignore this post.

HE DOESN'T MEAN THE SPACE ORC! READ THE POSTS!

Sorry, I'm just angry that he didn't seem to ready the post on using the Chaos (Fel) GRUNT! Remeber the ROC Orc campaign?

thanks for that, raleign.... uh... twice.... hes right, i didnt mean chaos (fel) orc. i want to import the skin to a third one. plus, like i said, the chaos fel orc is a different model anyways. i want to apply a new skin to the EXACT grunt model. thing is, i followed like 5 tutorials and NONE worked for me. yes, i know how to read directions.. additionaly, if i just replaced the the chaos orc skin, people wouldnt download it when they get the map, and theyd just see a chaos (fel) orc instead of my newly skinned orc. i want the other players to also see my skin... by the way, if this is the first time you've visited this thread, then read it first.
