going to sound stupid...and sorry if asked already

I created a variable that remembers the unit that did an action. Now, I want to access that variable with the unit specified event so that it would say *variable* dies. However, I can't seem to pick the variable. It gives me the pull down menu which shows my units that I've used with other triggers, the select unit button, and the edit variable button. How do I choose the variable itself?
In other words...something like.
TIA

You cannot use variables in events unless you use custom text.

How would you target something with unit dies if they don't already exist and you can't use variables in the event? In other words, if a unit is created sometime in the game and then I want an event to happen when it dies, how would I do that?

Event: Player owned unit dies
Condition: Triggering unit is equal to "your variable here"

You're right, it does sound stupid. You should hang yourself. =)
