Having troubles with Alpha channels (listens to groans)

I'm trying to Alpha out parts on a skin so they don't show up on the model, but I'm having troubles with it. I'm using PSP7 btw.

Here are the steps I take:

Open skin
Masks > Load from Alpha Channel > Apha Channel 1
Masks > View Mask
Masks > Edit

I select pure black and color parts out (shows up as the transparent pink pattern, as it should). When I'm finished:

Masks > Save to Alpha Channel > Alpha Channel 1 (There are 2 now)
Okay the overwrite
I then select pure white and clear over what I've done and save the file
I load the skin back into the game and theres no difference

I've also tried not overwriting the edit with pure white before I save, no difference (other than white splotches on the model)

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Help appreciated.

/edit

*none of the area is team color btw*

  1. If you want to edit .TGA files, then download the 7.1 update for adobe photoshop 7, the link is here for pc and here for mac
  2. If you're editing .bmp's, you don't need to do that
  3. Now open up the file and go to the channels tab (should be on a floating pallete)
  4. Go down to the Alpha channel and click it. Everything turns Black and White
  5. If it's black, it doesn't show up on the skin. If it's part of a team colour section, then this doesn't count and it will show up anyway, you can tell if it's team colour cos its usually slightly gradiented. If what you're trying to delete has team colour on it, give up
  6. Now, black out the area where the weapon is on the skin and import the skin back into the game (after converting it to .blp of course)

This was 12 posts down the list!!!

No idea. Your method of alpha'ing things out is complicated! I just select it and clear (delete) the area, in Photoshop. Lasso tool is your friend.
