3rd Person camera... In or Out?

For my campaign, I have a fully-created 3rd Person Camera system set up for the hero. It utilizes arrow key control, 3rd person camera, a setup where you can press different keys to make different attacks (as wee as a standard esc-key attack), a system for picking up items, edited hero so that he doen't flee or auto-attack. Basically, it's just like a 3rd Person Camera from many 3D RPGs available on the market.

Now I have a question. Would you, the community, rather control a hero in this way, by using the standard Warcraft III system, or some other system?

Please could you post comments, because although a poll entry is better than nothing, I can gain much more from actualy messages.

i believe that the standard warcraft 3 is just altogether better because you get to use your mouse and keyboard alll in unison. however. it would be nice if you left it with no auto attack and auto flee. actually do you think you could explain to me how you did that. i want to be able to also.

In the unit editor, find the Can Flee? field for the unit you want not to be able to flee, then uncheck the box.
Then, if you are using normal WE or a version of UMSWE before 4.0, go to Unit Classification and check worker. If you have UMSWE 4.0, in the Unit Classification string box, type Peon.

Slightly modified normal controls. Like a larger zoom out and a small tilt. It doesn't take much to make it alot cooler than normal. 3rd person get's anoying in the end...

It kind of depends. In "tides of serpents rpg" I never did like the 3rd person camera, but if it's really utilized and is more controlled for your own comfort, I'd probably say 3rd person view. I'm staying Neutral. :P

(Ahhh! You're here Mandrilx!)

RPGs with the normal cam are well... the standard kind... 3rd person is for special cases like...
1) You want to create a sense of dimension if you want to make the character feel small in a vast world, or high atop the mountain, or really deep under water, immersing in terrain.
2) You want to limit the player's sight
Well... I can't remember the third reason... I need sleep.

Anyway, here's when you should NEVER use the 3rd person.
1) It's filled with walls and stuff that block the camera
2) People get irritated by the irritating camera angle or the inability to click on certain objects (in this case make camera switchable).

Well... up to ya...

The 3rd person camera gives me a headache. If the map doesnt allow me to switch to the default war3 cam, I don't even bother to play.

I must say it depends on when/ where its used. For example, in my campain ( http://www.wc3campaigns.com/forums/s...threadid=37457 ) im thinking or having a battle that drops you into Leldorean (an Archer)'s shoes and makes you battle off them in 3rd person, but it isnt a very good idea- unless the maps are designed for it- to implement it all the time.

I personally like third person better because it's different and hasn't been used in to many maps yet. Like legacies, you should be able to get the option. For slowercomputers, 3rd person can be a little laggy if there are lots of units. THat's why in my RPG, (third person) units that at least one player isn't in contact with are hidden, greatly decreasing lag. :D

3rd person + arrow movement is best for an RPG I think. Its just so much cooler to be able to see everything really close and to see everything like a footman would.

I agree with that for the most part. But I chose "other" anyway ;)

I've just yet to see it implimented effectively and efficiently, but I really think it has potential. Especially for RPG campaigns. It might even have some impact on tactical Player vs Player gaming if used properly (probably 1st person is better for that, with lots of places to hide).

Legacies camera got annoying at times, but when dealing with a single hero that type of camera looks really good. A camera like legacies, but zoomed out slightly more and with better responsivness would be great.
