Blizzard needs to get a Clue

I spent many hours in the chat room of WC3 Campaigns and reading alot of threads on the forums. Basically, I was trying to find out if there was a way to switch maps in multiplayer and retain cache information between them. I get a "no" to both. Seems like everyone who is really trying to build scenarios really would like these features. Personally this is very upsetting. Not that it's not possible, but that blizzard would rather sit back and watch all these teams of people hack away at their software to get it to work than to break down and just add the feature. Is it really so hard to synchronize a cache load on two different computers across the internet? Is it really so dangerous to let people switch maps suddenly using triggers? I'm a C++ / Assembly coder myself and I was thinking about helping the endeavor, but I'd rather see blizzard get up and do something about this. I'm sure someone will think this is pointless in saying, but honestly, as a programmer, I know it wouldn't be much effort for them since the cache is chillin in memory anyway. It just seems like they'd rather limit everybody to a 1 map warcraft battle.

Yea, I agree that it is F***ed up, but I seem to remember people saying that it could be used to distribute viruses via the cache or something... so there's a reason for it

I agree with you aswell, ppl are just modding and editing blizzards software just to get shiz that Blizzard could add a feature of, and some ppl don't even know how...(like me :////). For example this site is full of modders/programmers.

Allowing you to save files to and delete files from someone else's hard drive is just BEGGING to be abused.

YEah right, look how many other games have multiplayer map changes and cache carrying from map to map. What if they just had the cache on the server? And what about someone hitting "Save game" in multiplayer? That puts files on your computer. Honestly, saying it can be abused is a cop out.

ok lets say they enabled this. someone could very very easily hack anything in your comp. they could force you to save over and over and over and use up all of your entire hard drive or they could force you to download viruses or they can do so many things it is not even funny. i just pray that they don't ever make it possible. because the day they do is the day i stop downloading new maps.

Great point, your right.

Augh. You silly noobs. You cant give viruses over caches. The only thing that used the cache is Warcraft and unless warcraft can modify system files and download .exes to your computer, you are very safe. And I don't think blizzard would plan to let anyone have .exes in a cache...

Edit: About deleting files, I doubt blizzard would be stupid enough to make the game able to delete any files other than cache warcraft files. Get a clue man.

Yes and caches are stored in the profile (normally) and can't be used to delete files or anything like that. If you're thinking about it allowing the "Create save game" action that doesn't even work because you can't blizzard sign a map. I agree with whoever said it earlier, saying that it could be used for viruses IS a cop out. The guy who started this thread, post this at the Bnet forums where someone from blizzard might actually read it

ThePersonThing: As we've stated, the problem lies not in viruses, but in abuse of the save/delete triggers. Anyone with a bit more than half a brain would be able to bypass the "delete only files of type" thing. And there's still the problem of Save abuse.

Exactly, unless there was some hardcoded limit of 1-3 save(s) per map.

Draco, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of being able to go back and forth between maps? If you could only do it a limited number of times, it would be easy to get screwed.

all in all, someone did ask in the bnet forums about caches, multi-player maps, etc... (was a several months ago). a blizzard representative actually replied, and said that they had attempted to accomodate this feature into frozen throne, but it was not feasible and was more complicated than they had imagined. so the idea was simply scratched from the board for TFT. tho i dunno how hard they tried or whether it was attempted, blizzard did claim that they wanted to allow multiplayer linked maps.

In TFT, Blizzard is God. They do what they do, and they have their reasons.
The possible reason I have speculated is...
- Blizzard actually found a way to bypass the limited cache system
- They figured it was far too complicated or that doing so would screw up your wc3.
- Those 4 people who quit blizzard? Maybe that's the problem :D
- Server issues of lag, crashes, and god knows what with the server and wc3 code.
I don't actually know what I'm talking about.

I'm just curious what all these other RTS games are that apparently have multiplayer linked caching betwen maps that GodBeastX is refering to? Why get upset about a feature that devoted fans are working to incorporate anyway? I don't understand when people expect everything to be in the game, as if they expect some sort of magical big red button in the map editor that "Kreatez uber-campain n0w!"
