Dark Crescent Publuc Version Survey

MarSara
For anyone who will want a copy of the DarkCrescent program for use with their own map(s), I need to know some information.

Currently I am making the server-side program run on Linux. This is the program that manages the server. (deletes unused accounts, broadcasts messages, accepts logins, manages the ban list, etc...)

The question is, how many people who want a copy of this program have a second computer that they can install Linux on to use as the server?

This server is what will store all the character information, so it will need to be on 24/7, otherwise people cannot login and retrieve their data. You will also need to know how to turn Linux into a server, so that has its own internet address (http://...). Although I will try to explain how to do this in the included readme file.

The reason I am asking this, is so that I can determine how user-friendly I need to make the server program and if I should even bother with a GUI version. Also the reason I am making this program for Linux, and not Windows, is because as all should know, Linux is more secure than Windows, and more stable (less downtime).

I hate Linux, piece of crap. I have a 2nd computer but I have someone else who uses it and they would be *clears throat* displeased if I turned it into a server.

How can you only have 193 posts but be a moderator? -_-

Nobody uses Linux, so I don't know what the point of making a linux umm... thing would be....

Linux sucks and I have a home server.

Please don't spam this thread with comments about how much you think Linux sucks, because that only exposes your nescience on the subject. For your information, the server that hosts this website that you're currently visiting to make your comments against Linux is running Linux, as does the majority of servers that host websites around the world. The security and stability of a Windows server is laughable compared to a Linux box. Please only reply with validated opinions in response to the topic at hand.

MarSara is a Hosted Project moderator of the Dark Crescent forum, hence the title.

Id really like to see this game, as it seems very prommising. Also I DO have a second computer, but getting linux and installing it on it is another problem. Further more, the expence in electricity would be hillarious :P I'm sorry I can't help, as of the reason above, and I hope that you find some way to publish this game to us :)

Thanks

@thepersonthing, omg, do u do anything other than flame?!...geez

The votes aren't looking too good MarSara.

The reason we are using a Unix system is for security, instead of giving a shared folder in a windows server, we can created individual accounts, only giving access to the account owner and the administrator (root).

Visit This thread for some screenshots of the win32 version of the program.

1) Plz remind me what linux is...
2) If its a program, could it work on my windows Xp?
3) Why would we need a second comp? I have 2, but only one internet cord right now and no hub.

I might be able to do help, if the questions are answered.

Problem is though, i have no knowladge of how to use linux.... although If i can use it on my comp, and someone shows me ill be more then glad to help.

Linux is an Operating System. Windows XP is an Operating System. However, unlike XP, Linux NEVER crashes.

Since it's not a program, but an operating system, you can't run it under XP.

There is no Linux version for Warcraft III. You have to play Warcraft III under windows. Since you will have to continually switch between the 2 OSs for running the Server software & playing the game, two computers are better (As there is no downtime, etc.)

This is a big decision you are making. If you want to install Linux for this project, you will have to learn a bit about computers. Then once you have dedicated a computer (it must be online 24/7 since it's a server. (How would you feel if B.net was only available erratically?)) it must run only Linux. You will be able to do many things from the box, except for gaming. You will also have to learn a new way to operate things. This cannot be exactly done overnight, but if you do get about it, you will have a stable virus free box which will immensely help the DC project.

If you do want to get through with this, borrow a small empty HDD (preferable)/ empty one of your drives in the second box, install Linux & get a taste of it. Then only should you commit to the idea.

MarSara - I can't exactly help you. I have a Linux box on Cable, but my provider only gives connections from 8pm-8am. My dad admins a http server with static ip, but that's in his office. Sorry. :(

We must note: Linux is not very user freindly, it is harder to work with if you are used to windows. But I wouldn't really know, I don't use it, nor do I know how.

Linux not crashing is laughable at best.
When people say Linux never crashes I have a great luagh.

What most people don't realize is that when you get your redhat linux or whatever you use as your main machine your actually expected to write fixes for exploits yourself, or download them off other linux junkies. Its an OS they can all crash. I can make a program which will crash windows in java and run it on Linux, HOLY **** IN LINUX IT CRASHED TOO WHAT THE **** OMG FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!!

Please don't say such fallacies that linux never crashes, and don't say hey I use linux as my fileserver and its been running for 8 quadrillion days. WELL NO ****, you haven't been using it to actually do anything except host files, **** you can have a windows server machine do the same exact thing sure windows 2003 or 2000 server will run using more memory but it doesn't matter for that function. On either case I expect the harddrive to fail before Linux or windows crashes.

And I love this statement virus free. Guess what there could be a linux virus, but linux isn't a mainstream OS. IF someone wanted to distrubute a virus to linux junkies (actually a smart one would put it on the Redhat Linux 9 Isos so you automatically get it as every whore is right now dling them) he can do it. And there isn't much in the way of virus scanning programs on linux...but hey Linux you can learn how to ward against them.

Linux is a better server os then windows. I wouldn't use it as your main OS For gaming as though some companies like ID do release Linux versions of there games not many do (War3 which is on Macs isn't even on LInux).
