error message when converting .max to .mdx

i get that whenever I try to convert my .max model to .mdx model.. i need help!!!

also.. im using 3ds max 4.2 how do i make skin for the model I made??? I tried to use the tutorial posted here but my version and his version is different and it shows totally different things. I need help!!

Convert the .max into a .3ds and then try to convert it into .mdx from there.

still won't work. Is there another way to convert files?
