My first map with triggers.

Well, i started playing with triggers yesterday.
I found out that it wasn't so very hard as i thought.
So today i made a map with triggers, and i thought that i maybe want to make a small campaign of it later when i have practised my trigger skills. Remember now that i have not even touched triggers before this so dont be too harsh. :D

Im extremely pleased with my work since i have so very limited knowledge of triggers and the world editor. You guys can download it and try it and tell me what you think. It would help out a lot.

hey man. i'm glad to hear you are trying triggers out. i like to think of myself as a trigger master. hehe. at any rate if you ever need some help with triggers feel free to post i will be glad to help you with anything you want. here are a few links to posts i have done in the past. they are very helpful to people trying how to learn things with triggers. they are advanced triggers so don't expect to understand them right off the bat. but you will learn them one day.

and here is one more i just added. lets you add levels to spells through triggers

Thanks for the help.:D

Considering this is your first attempt at triggering, good work. Keep it up, and soon you'll even be able to use JASS!

Immediate thoughts after one quick playthrough:

Well, it's not perfect, but for a first attempt, it's damn good. You make many of the same mistakes as many people, yet you already do many things so much better. For example, although they could use some polish, the very fact that you HAVE cinemas and have them in abundance and decent length is more than can be said about most maps. The two things I would suggest about all your cinemas:
  1. They start a bit suddenly... a slower fade into cinema mode might be in order. It's disconcerting to suddenly have the fog of war pop out of existance and lose control.
  2. Speaking of the fog of war vanishing, I might recommend you try out some other camera angles besides the default one. That way you won't show so much of the stuff the player isn't really meant to see since fog of war vanishes during cinemas.
Now speaking specifically about certain cinemas, the "secret passage" cinema can be accessed before you go see the West Bridge, and it probably shouldn't be. The healing after the battle with all the little spiders does not move the camera, thus if you habitually scroll ahead (like I do) then you hear the hero speak and cast a spell but don't see it properly. And lastly, when fighting the endboss, the interface reappears while the hero is using his attack. This may have been intentional, and it's a neat effect. I like it, it's just that you can mess with the interface while he's attacking.

But those are nitpicking. ;) Overall you did a great job. The terrain is really good, IMHO. And the triggers are good. The spelling and grammar need a little work, but not nearly as much as most people's in their maps. And you didn't use Arthas as a hero, which is always a plus in my book. The triggers are overall very good, it seems you've picked up on them excellently. I'm glad you've discovered they're not as hard as they sound. People are always so afraid of triggers (like my girlfriend) when they really don't need to be.

So for a first map with triggers, that's REALLY good. Thus I hope you don't mind my nitpicking it like it were a more advanced work, because it's better than some people's usual work. Though I must warn you, as a map it might need work... it feels more like the first part of a map than a map of itself. That and it's way too linear... I'm usually all for a good story and a little more linearity, but you're literally on a rail from start to finish in this map. Likewise, with two battles that are actually interactive, it's kind of lacking in the gameplay department. But for an introduction, that's not too bad. ;) Just- as I said, it feels like an introduction more than a real map. Still, I like the use of triggers, and that's what you were really asking about, right?

Wow.
Thanks for all the feedback Lost Loch.
Since i am very new to triggers i have a few problems some of the things you mentioned. For example i tried to get the secret passage part to have a condition, but i didnt know what to use.
I wanted that trigger to activate after you approached the bridge, didn't know how though. :(

THe story and that its too linear and such is mainly because i just used the map for triggers and terrain-practice. If i make this a campaign i will make the map larger and not so very linear.
It would be too much timeconsuming to do that when you are just experimenting and trying to learn. I think i will do a few more of these tiny maps before i start.

The resaon why i dont use camera angles is because i have not found out how to use it very good. If someone knows a camera tutorial it would be great if you could post it here.

I will add more battles and enemies to the campaign version of the map and i will probably try some trigger enhanced spells when i learn it a little better. I can only blame the grammar and spelling on that i'm not a native english speaker, but if i make this a campaign i will check for more spellingerrors and i will have someone read the script. There is nothing more annoying than extremely crappy english in maps, i will try to avoid that!

Thx again for the wonderful feedback!

You need to create a region where you want the trigger to activate. Do this in the terrain editor by pressing "R" to bring up region palette. Then you could make a trigger similar to this:

Event:
A Unit enters (your region here)
Condition:
Action:
Trigger: Run (the trigger you want to activate)

Hope this helps

Woah! You're not a native speaker of English? Could have fooled me... you have better English than a lot of the native speakers. Then again, maybe that's why you write so well- it's not your native language so you don't feel you can take shortcuts/you don't know how.

I understand about the story and all not being that great because this was mostly experimenting with triggers, so no worries. I just figured I might as well mention everything I could since it really turned out quite well.

Anyway, as for the condition thing, allow me to help you. First create a variable that will tell us whether the player has seen the bridge cinematic. Varibles can be managed by going to the Trigger editor, then Edit->Variables. Click the "+X" button to create a new variable. A variable is basically a place to store information. Put in a name for the variable. I'm using BridgeSeen. This name will be used to refer to it in triggers. Now you have to choose a type for the variable. If you just want to have an "on/off" variable (like "Have I seen the bridge blockade, yes or no?") then you can use a boolean type. Booleans can be TRUE or FALSE. However if you're going to use the variable to store multiple states you can be in, (like "have not seen the king", "have seen the king and gotten the mission", and "have completed the mission") then you would want to use an integer variable and change its value based on what state the player is in. For now, though, let's keep it simple and select Boolean. Set the Initial Value to False since the player starts off not having seen the bridge.

OK, now that we have that set up, we just have to make the triggers use it. In your trigger that starts the "secret passage" sequence, just put in a Condition: Boolean Comparison -> BridgeSeen Equal to True. This will make the trigger not execute unless the condition is met. Now go to the trigger that shows the "the bridge is blocked" cinematic and add a new Action: Set Variable -> Set BridgeSeen = True.

And that should do it! :D To help you, I've attached screenshots that should assist. Good luck!

Thanks! :D
You are very helpful, i appreciate it very much since its ver hard when you dont understand what to do

I'm going to try out that variable now, it's very good that i know that now, though i probably wont need it very much right away since im recreating the entire map to be a short cinematic now to learn the camera. I would say im already 30-40% done now with pretty decent camera moves. It wasn't too hard to learn either but i'm still not very good. I will post the cinematic too when its finished, it shouldnt take more then 1-2 days more though.

Now i have one camera question.
How do you make the camera rotate around a unit in the centre.
There is a camera trigger called "Rotate camera around point".
When i try that it rotates around the unit so you see it from the units angle, you see outside when i want it to show the inside if you understand what i mean.

Thanks again for all the help! :D
