Multiplayer Campaigns

Hello. I haven't been following this particular board but I had a few things in my mind that I wished to discuss. Since it seems like a lot of people here are thinking of making campaigns, I think my topic is a very important one.

I would like everyone here to know that I think the current RPG maps on bnet are by far more fun than any singleplayer campaign that I would ever play. It's not to say that singleplayer campaigns are of any less value, but it's the fact that it's multiplayer, and made to enjoy with other people.

A singleplayer campaign usually offers a lot of atmosphere and storyline which involves a player, as well as give a player freedom to take their time and get involved in the game. However, with the power of the current WE, the same atmosphere can be shared with others. I also find that going through missions with other people is a much more thrilling experience because you can always share your thoughts with someone right there, unlike in a singleplayer game where your experiences would be kept to yourself.

Anyways, I'd just like to share my thoughts and bring up some discussion. I personally think that if you are thinking of making a campaign, maybe think of a way to make it multiplayer. There are many RPG maps out there, but there have not been any multimap campaigns on bnet, and I think it would be really interesting to have something like this.

If the campaign involves new skins or models or whatnot, then I'm not sure how it would work over Bnet, but it's just a thought. Having a campaign multiplayer really makes it much more well-recieved as well as played often.

actually... i dunno bout desync since I've no experience... but

if there's work around the desync it's definately possible to do multiplayer campaigns as long as you don't want as personal of a hero.

No hero = no cache = multiplayer goodiness.

and as for desync, you could just not have it auto continue... just let them remake a game with the next map based on how the first map played out (have a trigger indicate name of next map perhaps).

so there you have it, very multiplayable, just... no continuous (sp?) heroes and no auto-continue to next map. Kinda boring, but still... you HAVE to start somewhere.

EDIT: in addition, we all thought originally that we were STUCK with no new models.. and yet people messed around with it and found out we could edit models... so if people decided to spend a good quality amount of time investigating the possiblity, I bet you there would be a few breakthroughs... prolly not a fully multiplayer campaign but still... it's how things are discovered.

I was thinking the same. Just have players manually load up the next "chapter" themselves when it's released. I remember aticipating act 2 versions of the Starcraft "Diablo 2" map and was overjoyed when I got my hands on it. Even though it wasn't at all similar to the first, just the thought of continuity was awesome.

As for actual continuity, a well-made campaign should not be hindered by your hero not being the same level as he left off last game, or not carry the exact same items as before. Each game should be a start from scratch anyways, since the lvl cap is 10 and how much fun can it be to start off with lvl 10 heroes? What's important is storyline, gameplay and involving players into the world you create.

Well... my experience in custom games is:
1. 10% of people lag out in the beginning of the game and fail to enter it
2. 30-50% get bored and leave
3. 10% leaves because theyre asses
4. The game lags out and goodbye campaign
5. You cannot save.. not good in campaigns
6. There is no 6. I need no 6. You should be so convinced by my first 5 points that theres no need to read 6.

heh DA you seem to think we have no friends that would play a campaign with us regardless of difficulties???

Anyway, it would be too much fun to have a campaign allowing for multiplayer, and then play it with your bnet/RL friends.

IT seems people are already shaking their heads to something that, if even tried, would be one of the most popular things done. It's a shame that we'll prolly never see one under any circumstances because everyone only cares about the problems and never the solution.

I guess I did forget to mention that.

People who play multiplayer campaigns would most likely get their friends to play as well. On a daily routine a bunch of friends an I always go on bnet for som comp stomps or play some RPG maps. Most of the time we go out to download and leave just for the map. Sure a bunch of people out there can be asses, but who cares? It's not like it's the map's fault. When Kaggz' RPG came out there were few people who actually bashed the map itself. Also playing with bad players only ruins the experience in that particular game, I hardly think that people would actually start hating a map because of random players (Unless the map is bugged for something cheesy to be let through).

Besides, anyone who does download the map has the potential of sending it to someone else. This is free advertisement, and it is much more widely available than posting it on a site and having people come to download it.

But I do respect everyone's opinions here. The system is still flawed and multiplayer campaigns might not be the perfect thing at tis time, especially with all the complications such as extremely long gameplay over the internet, complicated map switching, etc.

hm if and i mean if the cache work in mutliplayer(MP)
and loading of map is possible , it will either work or in chaos.
this iss wat i mean by work

after a certain thing , every1 move on the next campaign and every1 play . there is nothing about it

but ... if for example, if a unit enter a location and trigger off the changing of map , so wat happen to the other player ??? they remain in the map or change map too ?

but i still hope that cache work in MP, and if it do , we could make a game like the real D2 and the player is allow to save their charactor as their a/c name under catogery Hero
and when they start the same map , make a trigger so that the person can load their charactor.and tons of thing can be done . dont you think so ?

EDIT : or how about saving it inside the bnet it self ???? rather than the computer.

Now that would be interesting....

if it's an RPG and there are opposing teams, then if one team (or even one player) finished his side first, he should get a headstart on map2... :)

but that would require cache to work, which it isn't at the moment, so we're stuck with the old school multiplayer system.
