Terraining Tips

Hey everyone. TheZaCrew made a thread asking if he should write a terraining tutorial, and a lot of people so far have said to just make a tips thread. Well let's start with the tips! To make this a bit more organized, put what kind of tips you'll be giving, be it for doodads, or for certain tilesets.

Example:

Doodad Placement
Always use the ctrl+page up/page down keys to sink your doodads into the ground. This way people won't see floating doodads. Always do this for trees, and put environment doodads around the bases of the trees to make it look more natural.

It'd be great if we could get tips for every tileset, what tiles make a good custom tileset, what doodads look good with what tileset, etc. Once we've got as many tips as possible, I'll compile them all into a new thread and we'll have a moderator sticky it.

Sound good? Let's have them tips start rolling in!

EDIT Oh yeah. It would be great if screenshots were included.

here is a thread that did exactly this thing maybe 2-3 or maybe 4 days ago. not long anyway. here is the link.

maybe we should just continue this thread rather than starting a brand new one. and here is a pic of my terrain just because i felt like posting it.

my tip is to just make things smaller. almost every enviormental doodad(not all but most) needs to be shruken. they are mostly all too big in my opinion. i shrink outland plants to look like flowers. i shrunk the mushrooms. i shrunk lots and lots of stuff. try it out.

Well that one isn't very organized, and it doesn't have very many tips, just a bunch of screenshots. This thread will be mostly tips, using screenshots to illustrate what you're saying and to give examples.

sounds fair enuff. maybe some of the people will repost here with more tips. also i would liek to say thank you for the cntrl page up and page down thing. i never knew anything about that. very cool. antoehr tip i have is make sure that all your doodads fit with thier surroundings. things that should not be done include putting a torch in the water. putting ice on a tileset that is red like fire or lava. adding snow to mountains when the rest of the map looks like a jungle or sand and such. and make sure all you tilesets go together well. don't put bricks in the middle of a forrest. use rocks instead. things like that make the difference.

edit: oh yea and when you double post you can get rid of them by hittin the edit post button than after that look at the top of the screen and check the box that says delete than look to the right a little and click the button that says delete now. lol. i just hit the reply now button like 5 times on accident.

edited edit: and don't try to post and than delete it to get your points up. it won't work and it never has. even before the point system it didn't raise your post count.

Wow. Only four replies... and dying already. Ok here's another tip.

To move doodads very close to each other, press and hold the ctrl key and use the numpad keys to move the doodad with collision disabled. This allows you to connect those stone walls and make those underground caverns that DK did with the arches.

Make sure that num lock is on, or else it won't work.

Please continue alike topics in the same thread. Thanks for understanding.
