Multi-Devloper RPG

I am curious as to how many people would be willing to create an RPG together.

I don't mean, work on one map with a thousand people, but have many maps created by many people that all tie in with the same storyline. I've got several ideas as to how to make this work, but I would like to have everybody's input before i do anything about it.

It would end up being something like a tree of maps for people to explore each one having some sort of ranking system to determine a player's hero is too high or too low for a level. I have heard that there is a new save hero function out there somewhere. If someone could point me in that direction that would be great.

i was thinking a sort of FF type RPG, since everyone seems to like it, and it covers just about every aspect of any RPG game.

Yeah... so this is the best idea I've heard all week.

Do you want it to be a multi-user RPG though? Because the idea of a branching structure of maps will be hard to deal with when you want to get from one to another and there are several in-between and at each switch you have to either write down a code or use a 3rd-party program.

The idea would still be Awesome for a 1P RPG though... Just think, you could start it with one map and guidelines on how to make more, and people could build off of it... each map would check to see if the one you're "linking" to exists before trying to load it... and if it didn't, well, it would tell you. Then you could just download all the new maps from a central location... say, this web board... yeah, this idea is sweet. Go to it.

I'd was planning on making it mult-player RPG, but since you suggested it, single player sounds really good. I guess i'll start by making some sort of story line. And then anyone who asks can take a "section" of storyline and build their map off of it. I figure that will create a lot game really fast.

And if it seems to go well, maybe i'll look into a way to make it multi_player. Do you have any desire for a particular story, or should i just write one? (i've got a friend who i'm pretty sure might end up being the scribe for world of warcraft, so we could use his stuff, it's pretty good).

why not make the storyline endless? not like an open RPG but at the end of every map new questions open up. Then the next map can either awnser it or start something else *sry i'm a little lost* do you mean your *team* or whatever will make the maps or will people who want to make an RPG map do this and just submit them?

Well, I can only hope I can be a good enough modder to create something worthy of being included, but I'm all game if this goes ahead! It would take some crazy pre-planning... sending a package of custom Object and such data to everyone to make sure there aren't any incompatabilities across maps... etc. But I think it'd be great. I'd be happy to take a map or the position of "scribe" or whatever. It could prove a fascinating challenge, and it just sounds like a neat way to be part of something bigger than my one map.

I planned on making it endless. What your suggesting is exactly what i hoped for in fact. I don't have a team as you put it, but yes i just plan on having people submit maps, and perhaps have votes to select the best one, or have a team to take the best qualities from each, and somehow intertwine them. I'd like to leave the story line open, that way i would be able to accept all good maps (even tho the storyline would burst off in all directions). I figure i'll just make guidelines so that it would work out (ie all new maps would have their own heroes and such, just perhaps the same game setting, or relate to past maps somehow).

I plan on just making it one player to start. Since making the MMRPG would be insanely harder (although it is in the plan). Thanks for again everyone's input. I don't really have scribe yet, so if you think your up for it, i'd be glad to map out a small story for ya (just PM me with a 2-4pg short)

I've been told others had this idea before me, but i only found this one guy, and he's gonna need some powerful programmers to complete his idea. His website is here. I might later, but right now I don't want to do all the work he's looking for (mostly the save function, but also the uniqe battle system and other such complex things) so i'm just going to start my own. I want to make it more simple (that way others can branch off easier) and it will have a more diversified playing field. I hope to finish a short 'prologue' by the end of Nov. It all depends when i finish my AoS with a twist map i'm working on now.

Hmmmmm... tricksy.... to create a story that can span maps and worlds of different characters and items and things... travel in many directions... yet still be good.

OK... I'm game to try to create a jumping-off point. :gsmile: Er... but do you want me to PM you or you to PM me? I think I lost you briefly there. I have a feeling there's not much story to write aside from a backstory and start point that establishes everything if everyone's going to be taking it in different directions.

Anyway, it sounds like a good idea, and I understand better now where it is you want to take it. I know I've heard this idea before, but I can't say I can find any evidence of it either, so hey... can't hurt, right?

Oh, and I completely agree that making it multi-player would be INSANE... No thank you, it sounds like a fine single-player RPG all the same... the creation of it is the multi-player part. ;) And I agree that having something fairly simple (at least compared to brandon's work) will be great. It allows people to work on it more freely and gives everyone a little more artistic freedom, plus it makes the job more doable, both for us and anyone who adds on. Not to say there's anything wrong with the other idea, more power to them, but- I dunno, I just think there needs to be a "simple" counterpart, maybe.
