Guidance on how the "targets allowed" options work

There's a huge overlap in the types of targets that are allowed for a given unit in the unit editor. Not to mention that you can select "none" and then go on and select other options as well. Does anybody understand how all of these interact with each other. I'm trying to make it impossible for a unit to attack an allied player's unit (note this is different than the "allied" setting, which seems to merely prevent a player from attacking their *own* units). Many of these settings seem to be on by default (that is, even when, say neutral is unchecked, normal units can target neutrals. Ditto with organic, mechanical, alive, etc). Has anyone played around with these enough to understand how to enable and disable specific things?
