Chrono Trigger based Offense Map (Would like some ideas)

After greatly enjoying game like Rival Nations and Final Fantasy Legacy, I'm currently working with a friend of mine on an offense map based upon a game we both love, Chrono Trigger. The end product is looking to contain around 20 custom heroes:

Good:
Crono
Marle
Lucca
Frog
Ayla
Robo
Good Magus
Tabin
Spekkio
Cyrus

Evil:
Ozzie
Slash
Flea
Evil Magus
Queen Zeal
Zombor
Yakra
Dalton
Atropos
Azala

There will be a ton of custom spells (4-8 per character) not counting at least one double tech for every combination (Good and Evil). And by custom spells I'm not talking about just renaming what Blizzard already gave us - most are trigger-based. I'm only making it through 1-2 characters a day, not counting the vast amount of tweaking and debugging from the problems that will pop up later.

As you can imagine, it is probably going to take us a while, however we hope to have an alpha version of the map done by the end of the week (Not really playable but will contain 6 of the 20 characters along with enough functionality to give you the jist of things). We're doing this thing from scratch, although we hope to incorporate what we feel are the best concepts from the other mods we've played.

I've learned a ton about doing special effects and custom spells from the people that post on these forums, and I'd just like to express my thanks to all the people willing to share information and take the time to help out others.

What I'd like to know now is if there is anything that you feel ABSOLUTELY has to be in Chrono Trigger based mod. I can't guarantee that everything will be able to make it in, but suggestions lead to fresh ideas, which in turn make for a better gaming experience for everyone.

If you don't include anything about time travel, the whole effort will be wasted. I'm not sure what an Offense map would be (DOTA-like?). The charm of CT is that the characters operate/influence events in the future from their timeline. You're actually having pronounced effects on the world by your efforts, not just fighting a trawl of meaningless badguys in differently named areas.

Consider making several versions of the map, with Reptites attaking Aoki (?) villagers in 65 billion, a relatively peaceful time in 12,000 BC, a war in 600 AD, the millenium fair in 1000 AD and, of course, the barren, mutant filled wasteland of 2300 AD. Should the forces of evil win in 65,000, replace all the human units with reptite units in the future. Should evil win in 600, destroy Guardia castle. etc. etc. Come up with several key plot elements that would occur in each timeline, and how items from one future could help out in the past.

Also, isn't Spekkio a little overmuch for an ally? He is, after all, the master of war.

This is more of a team vs. team map a la Final Fantasy Legacy 1.4. I'm not entirely sure how someone would go about integrating multiple maps and time periods with that style of play.

A little bit of artistic license will be taken with some of the characters, but that's kind of a given since the interest of game balance comes before "making things the way they ought to be" in my opinion.

Well, suit yourself. I'd be interested in seeing it, although I'm suspicious this will just end up being a CT themed hero arena...

You need to put in a bunch of stuff to mkae it mor lik crono trggr.

1.mak it lik Rivle Nations , whre you get agility heros. Then mak Chrono and Mageus the best at agility. And make lots of Agility items.

2. Make Lavos a bad guy. He moves rael slow like, but can kill anyting he hits.

3.make it so thers only 1 path to go down. Rivle nations gets lame when the enemy goes down the left or rihgt sieds.

4.You should but some dbz chars in it. Cause' dbz is el33t. also, dbz and ct were drawn by the same guy, so it makes sense.

5.you need to make it intresting, so put in parts like tryple techs. maybe you should make it so there's a 10ple tech if all the ppl work together.

6. 20 chars isn't enough. you should ad all teh CC chars to.

7.you need to do the thing that other guy said. Make it so everymap is different. In some, the good guys get more people, and they can win by default.

8. to balances out lavos make it so spekioo can kill everything like Wrath of God, cause he is god. But make it only kill bad guys.

90. Yopu need to pay attention b/c you got the names f/d up.
It's Chrono, not crono!! and Magus is always a bad guy. You shouldn but him on the good team cause he dies when you fight him. he doesn't go good. Maybe you should use him when he was a little kid. I think his name was schala.
And you shouldn't make up characters. WTF?>? Atropos. HAHA.
Sorry d900d i didn't want other peple to mak fun of you, when you cnat evn spell and you make up stoff.

and one more thing. WHy are youm aking the pslells based on the crono trigger?> You shoud base some spells on the stuff tht is already in the game. It seems like only chroono and lavos should be albe to do trigger spells cause they go through time. and the game is called crono trigger so noobyd but chrono shoud get triggers...11!!

Ninja_Courage; um... yikes. If this is a hero arena in the making, do you *really* think it'd be balanced to have characters (Lavos, Spekkio) be able to kill other units in one hit? Do you know what a trigger spell is? A single pathway = zzzz.

Go play CT again, you might discover that a) Magus can be taken on as a party member, b) Atropos was Robo's girlfriend, he fights her in the Factory, c) Schala was Magus' sister.

As for the CC and DBZ references, oy.

Alright, I am making a Chrono Trigger RPG and have a few ideas for you.

Magus should be on only one side. Possibly evil because having him join your party is optional. Maybe replace him with Melchior or Schala.

Try to stay faithful to the real abilities. IE have Crono have Luminaire, Cyclone etc.

Tabin is spelled Taban, and what would he do?:hm: Give Lucca a hat and a vest? Repace him.

Use tides of blood as a model of a good AoS map. I know you cant edit it, but figure out what makes it so damn fun and youve got a good start. I have a few specific ideas if you want them. PM me or something.

Unique weapons for heroes. Make them complement the hero using them. Possibly make a side quest for the weapon.

How do you plan on doing double techs? I want to know... Badly...

Actually, this was all done in a different manner by two guys named Squallish and Goobjihn. It's got a lot of Squaresoft characters fighting for a pair of shoes. Check it out...

bump

A friend wrote the first post that i did here. But I know the guys who are making it and I believe it will be a very fun game too play

Actually 3 double techs have already been completed and you can only use them if ur 2 heroes are nears each other... something like 800 range. The double techs are really cool and work well.
So far there is Ice Sword = marle and crono
Fir Sword = lucca and crono
and omnipotent = marle and lucca
those 3 characters for the good side are already done

Post here on any other double tech possibilities for the characters above.

Thanks for your posts guys, mostly good ideas all around (except for the flaming troll idiot guy).

There should be an early beta of what's done so far up soon. Check the double techs out then and see what you think.

I actually do have a plan for Taban that fits him in nicely I think.

This isn't an RPG. Probably not going to find much in the way of Side Quests here.

There are plenty of weapons, armors, helms, and accessories planned for the final version.

A friend of mine is doing the map from scratch. I think it looks rather good, but I'll leave it to you guys to judge.

I'm going to try and stay true to CT as much as possible, but the fun factor and balance of the game itself must come first. This doesn't mean that characters are going to have nonsensical abilities or anything like that. Crono, for example, has Lightning Magic, Cyclone, Slash, and Luminaire (and Ice Sword and Fire Sword as his Double Techs with Marle and Lucca).

I understand that my words probably aren't going to win over any of the cynics among you, so I'll try and get an early beta of the map ready to roll in the next day or so. I'd say give it a try and then you can judge if I'm making some crappy "CT themed Hero Arena" (ick) or a quality game that shows promise of good things to come.

This is a long way off from the final product, but I think it shows the gist of what's going on. It is playable for up to six people, so right now it's more a matter of adding more content than anything. Feel free to consult the quest log for more info on how the game works. Enjoy!

Well I just ran one test using chrono... and here's feedback.

1) You could have a little more description on the spells. If I didn't know better I would think slash only affected one enemy.
2) Might be a little irritating to type for double techs. Why not, for double techs, you create a whole new spell book. Lvl 1 double techs... lvl 2 double techs... lvl 3 double techs. Then for the double tech to work, the "passive" double techer has to channel the spell into the "active" double techer (like in Fire sword, chrono is the active double techer, cause he HITS. Lucca just channels the flame into the sword). Naturally, the "Active" double techer will see that the "passive" double techer is channeling something into him, and has a chance to activate his double tech to complete it. You get what i mean. Alternatively you could just make fire sword boost Chrono's attack and be a channeling spell so Chrono doesn't actually HAVE to do anything (I didn't test out more than 1 player so I don't actually know what they do.)
3) I like the look of luminaire (based off flame strike I think), except that the big round warning lights make it easy for enemy heroes to run away (although that may have been the whole point).
4) Oh yes. I can't use tabs. No idea why. Issit a tab bug or a chrono bug?

Plasma, Ninja_courage is a friend of mine that was just giving me some crap. He's actually quite intelligent and was making that entire post as a jest. I didn't really find it that funny personally.

Ant:

I actually took the spell descriptions relatively verbatim out of the descriptions in the game where possible. I'll probably go back through them and add more information though, because I agree that not everything is as obvious as it should be.

Hero's cannot have more than one of any ability, and giving a hero more than one spellbook has a wonky effect (Marle has two and it collapses them into one). Problems would occur since there is a finite number of dummy abilities to base stuff on. Even if I could do it that way, I'm already using spellbooks to implement the various magic types (Ice Magic, Fire Magic, etc.), so the way it is set up is basically the best solution I could come up with. (It gets exceeding complicated in figuring out which DTs different characters have as well, given that with the planned 10 Heroes on each side each character would have 9 double techs, of which there would have to be a different spellbook ability made for each permutation.)

Glad you like Luminaire, it actually isn't based off Flamestrike at all. The warning lights are there pretty much exactly for the reason you guessed at. Flea's ultimate has a similar warning.

I asked Angry_Keebler about the tabs thing (He's the one that did them) and he told me they work. I'll check that out myself though.

It's a pretty bland DotA, Reldan. Besides having more flavorless units spawn, there's really little or no interaction with the computer "town." Remember, you're basing this map on an RPG, and a time travelling one at that. Yet you've ignored all the rich source material to have knights and archers blandly smacking around zombies and skeletons. I'm not sure where you feel this fits in with the CT story; the only army fight was in 600 AD, but the map doesn't look a bit like Guardia Kingdom.

At VERY least, have some ability for the players to switch time periods, say by entering portal spots and going to the End of Time to bring specific eras to the battle - instead of Magus' army, you might be fighting Reptites or Mutants and Robots.

The dual techs were confusing, but the stuff is there to make them work, and were partially well done. Initiating them is as much a matter of guesswork and chance as much as it is strategy (nice touch on having ice sword, followed by Crono's bladestorm ability, frost nova every target hit by the initial swirl), but they're satisfying when they do happen. Just confusing as all get out. You should create a Dual Tech ability that tarets friendly units, so that the two come into range and then perform a tech; typing in the name of the unit is bogglingly confusing.

I'd spend more time on making better use of the source material then on any other tweaks.

Hey you guys. I'm glad I found so many CT fans in one place because I'm doing a CT campaign! And not some crappy 3 mission hack-and-slash thing. We're working on a serious CT remake with tons of custom models and skins, all the original music, and the entire storyline being told word for word alongside new 3d graphics and stylish cinematics. Click on the pic below if you're interested, and contact me by AIM if you want to help.

P.S. Whoever wrote Ninja_Courage's first post is an IDIOT. Even if he his joking, it's not funny ¬_¬
