Ok, I'm not at home so I can't post the map just yet, but I was wondering what people thought of concept. Basically I made a small spell system with every hero having three abilities, target magic, enchant magic and area magic. Target magic is based off frostnova except it deals no damage whatsoever and has no effect, so it does nothing. The same with the other two, enchant is based off thunderclap and area is based off silence neither of them have any effect. However if you're carrying a 'Fire Materia' (an item) which also does absolutely nothing, and you're carrying it in item slot 1 and cast target magic on a unit, it will deal 50 damage to the unit. If it's in slot 2 the same effect, if in slot 3 then it will only deal damage when Enchant magic is cast. Basically Target Magic when cast checks slots 1 and 2 for items and casts trigger spells based on what 'Materia' you are carrying. Enchant checks 3 and 4 and Area check 5 and 6. All three target enchant and area effect allies foes and youself (except enchant that excludes your own hero) and I made around 7 materia for testing purposes. Fire adds 50 damage, Holy heals 50 health, poison casts poison effects upon those that are effected, death has a 15% chance of casting doom, etc. So you can customize your hero spells based on materia you find in battles and you buy at towns...I was originally just going to post the spellsystem but then I thought what the hell, I'll throw in a minirpg too, so it's a 15 minute or so rpg with a stupid story I made in half an hour with a bad design but the real purpose was to see what the spell system would look like in game...unfortunately my tests on b.net proved to me how stupid some people are and they would cast fire magic on anyone, including their allies (sigh)...in a few hours I'll be home and I'll post it, I just want to know what people A) think of the spellsystem and B) whether they think it's worth making a proper rpg using the spellsystem (with more like 50 materia) And yes I know materia is from FF7 I just needed a name at the time. Please tell me what you think of the idea and then what you think of it when you play it tomorrow. Cheers. |

Hey Balthamos, this sounds pretty cool. I encourage you to come up with another name for the items. Materia's pretty well-known, and fan-fiction-style maps just don't do it for me. I don't like cross-genre stuff. I want to play this when you have it ready. |

I'll be watching for when you get back to your WC computer and get this posted. I understand about the name, but I think that's a REALLY cool and original concept, and I can't wait to see how it works out. My hat is off to you, Balthamos. |

Sounds cool, I agree with the "Change the name" thing, Can't wait for it... Already subscribed to this thread so I can see it when you post it :ggani: |

Ok here it is, admittedly this is the tiny map remember, it's really a joke of an rpg it's just so I could test the spellsystem in multiplayer setting, i.e 4 or so players running around casting the crazy spells. The system isn't complete mind you, and there are things I've already realised should be added, the main thing is the immense potential I see in it. So enjoy the map, and try it out a few times...I hope people understand the spell system. |

Awesome! First of all, the system is great. I quickly found myself having to make difficult decisions over which materia were best to put where. I ended up with holy and wind in my first two slots, fire and poison (or dark, depending) in my next two, and earth and ice in my last two, but that was largely chance more than anything. I especially loved the ability to combine effects... it added a whole new level that wouldn't have been there if you could only pick one to use at a time. You might want to make the Enchant spell a little more expensive, though. It's not as much worse than the area-effect spell as its cost would suggest. On top of that, you've got some crazy mapmaking skills, especially with the intentionally-bad dialogue... I laughed at that huge undead charge. And the merchant was great. Dialogue with as much character as his is something we need more of around here. Again- my hat is off to you. *bows* I haven't had this much fun playing a map in too long. |

I have yet to check but does killing people with these spells give XP last I checked trigger based spell do not give XP... Edit: Very interesting map, I see how you got around the trigger based spell problem, but this raises a new problem...you can't really add custom resistances. As seen by your undead being healed by your holy spell... Also what did you use to make it UMSWE? Can you create a version for us UMSWE haters? Like one where you just converted everything to jass? I'd do it myself but I can't stand editing wtg files (There hideous to mess with). |

[Loved the spell system and its versatility... I strongly encourage you to make a full RPG using that spell system. It was great just in your demo map with so few elemental shards... Although Healing Undead with heal spells didn't seem right... I don't know your method for making the spells and everything but... If you use "invisible casters" then perhaps you could base the "Heal" off of holy light (which hurts undead...) Again, LOVED IT, and strongly suggest you make a full RPG using it. :ggani: |

Actually he uses for the most part just a special effect and then adds damage via triggers. He does have a unit cast a spell when there is a status that needs to be inflicted. As holy light required no status infliction he did it by triggers. He can define some array of all monsters and there resistance towards the elements. Thats something I'd do if this was my map. Its an excellent demo. And if you want when it is complete system I'll sticky it for you in the trigger repository, if you include commentry on how you did it (for those people who'd like to know). |

weaaddar is right I used invisible casters appearing and quickly casting abilities for status effects while for holy and fire I just dealt the damage with normal triggering. Unfortunately I don't know jass, or even how to convert to it like you said so unless you give me a few pointers on how to convert it I can't give you a version of it in jass, unless someone else with UMSWE was kind enough to post it for you. And secondly, thankyou for all the compliments and the feedback. I'm really glad people liked the system and if I do make this into a map I'll probably fix it all up...there's a few things that could be more efficient and so forth, like for one I'd change it to access arrays of the spells to be cast and just use a big forloop for casting. Thirdly yes I was planning on the immunities of fire is good against water etc, my plan for that was to simply edit the armour pictures for units into say a fire looking icon for fire armour and so forth, and then add the units into an array which is checked for their immunities. Of course I'd give undead the dark armour which would cause healing magics to deal damage etc. Also I was thinking of having it so the damage from damage spells was based on either your hero's intelligence or just their level. Of course the spell effect type spells are mostly percentage effects and wouldn't need anything changed for them. And lastly I'd like to ask what people thought of this...a friend of mine tried it and thought that area and enchant were fairly similar as well...so I was thinking perhaps during hero selection for a proper rpg your heroes have different types of targeting abilities and each hero has a total of two abilities(sounds like a small amount I know) and the item area isn't 3 rows but 2 columns instead...and I'd expand the possible abilities from the 3 to around 5...adding 'self' casts magic on just you, a low cost and quick cooldown, perfect for a warrior class. Tell me what you think of these improvements please :D and thankyou for all the input so far. |

havnen't tried the map but i like the self casts. Why don't you have like a Warrior Class and a Mage Class. Warrior have self cast. Mages have an AOE spell *that they can choose?* and increased mana regen *for ultimate cheese* while warriors have self casting *you already said* |

I like the idea of choosing which types you want and limiting the area spell. And yeah, I was wondering about whether it wouldn't be good to add auto-self-spells too, but you've already beaten me to it. I like it. Oh, and by the way, I happened to stumble over to my neighborhood UMSWE and convert the triggers to JASS to create this attachment. (Just be warned, I did nothing more than convert them... no niceties, no extra comments) And for your own reference, to convert something to JASS, just select the trigger and go to Edit->Convert to Custom Text. |

He's watching Matrix: Revolutions right now, so he wont reply for a while. Anyway, his triggers are a mess. He doesnt use arrays. :P. So look at your own risk. !!!. Lol. Anyway im normal again. :0 |

Or something similar? Add in an additional ability that is activated by reaching a certain level or by an in game quest, etc. And an additional "inventory" box to store the items in, which gives an enhanced effect (wider AoE, doubled or tripled damage/healing, and such). I really like the concept though, to answer your original question Very creative to include this in a WC3 map and I think it would be awesome to play a 'real' map (or several!) with these abilities. Oh, and your really big monster royally kicked my butt =P |
