How about an open RPG where a player character hero (you choose) picks some creature (you choose too) to train up and fight with.
But when I say open RPG, I mean like, theres several different story lines a player can follow. Not just creep-fest crap.

How about it? Would it work?

I thought of something like that before, but my idea was that you and your pet are like, connected, hurting one of you slightly hurts the other, and if one dies the other dies. And there are things your creature can do that you can't, like fit through passages or become invisible, my idea was that your animal was more stealthy but you could fight...of course being an open rpg there won't be too much need for stealth, but that's just my 2 cents.

You'd definately have to work to make it something other than a summoned pet (bear, wolf, pig, hawk) spell. Have abilities that the two can do for each other.

Wizard's familiar: Provides Brilliance aura (but only to its owner), can be charged up by its master to cast spells?

Necromancer's zombie: Draws off of its master's life force (sort a negative unholy aura), but occassionally terrifies (slows) foes around it?

That sorta thing? I'm not sure what a warrior would keep around; probably a wolf who can bloodlust its master.

Yeah! More Pokemon Maps! :mtk:

Seriously I think the idea of a "familiar" is a pretty good one, and although it has been done many times, if done right it's still fun. There are two problems you have to address here:

1. How to make it so the main character has capabilities that are very different from the familiar's and you have to exploit both to compete. Maybe the familiar can swim or fly while the hero is grounded... I'm sure you have ideas of your own already.

2. How to set up the controls so you can command both the main character and the familiar in-detail simultaneously. Maybe you give simple commands to the familiar with the keyboard. A split-screen would be cool but I don't think WC3 can do that...

Anyway you get the idea. Good hunting!

if its gonna be able to be played in single player then it should be damn fine as long as its a proper creature not like the beastmasters summon crap

Hopefully, there would be a penalty if the pet dies... Otherwise, it would be just like that damn-childish Pokemon.

kenshin roxxars!

Pokemon Map rocks!

What u can do tough is ur character is a mage and learns spells in books to summon monsties that can lvl. And ur characters have a few backup spells. You then venture in the world, meet npcs that give quests and eventually get to fight each otehr. with ur lil beefed up armies ^^

Ever play "Black and White?"

This idea sounds a whole lot like that, sans the part where you play God and have your pet try to beat up on the other god's pets.

I've always been a fan of having a constant companion with you in a game. Something other than a blabbering NPC with sub-par stats that you're always saving from imminent death.

"Worthless Mutt" from Arcanum, or "Dogmeat" from the Fallout series. Now that's the good stuff right there.

Brings shades of the craze that went around a few years back involving digital pets on keychains. Ohhhh, the horror.

I'll be impressed!

Sounds like a cool idea, if you based it off that game Black And White, that would be awesome!
