Guest | I've seen various threads around, and notice some are doing the same old mistakes I've seen. Here's some tips for you, if you're starting your own mod or campaign. -Know what you want. Mention the exact roles you want (Not 'just staff') and what they need to do. You need some mapmaking done? What sort of maps? Is it general mapmaking? Unit placement? Trigger editing? Be completely specific. -Keep it small If you're starting up for the first time, DON'T try and do a massive campaign with 30 levels, 20 new heroes and 10 new units. Keep it realistic and try not to depend on getting anyone too much, otherwise you'll need something and be unable to attain it- so you'll be stuck and fall short. Do something small and work your way up. By doing that, you can actually prove you can finish something instead of giving up (As many end up doing). Then perhaps you could impress talented modellers and the like into joining. -Do work yourself ANYONE can come up with a cool idea for a mod or campaign - it's true- but going the mile and actually MAKING something is what impresses people. Be prepared to do the majority of your work yourself. I've seen a great deal of idiots want to make a campaign, but they're unprepared to actually make some of the maps or even write a script. It's your campaign- YOU have to put the work and effort into it. -Talent for talent You should have some skill or talent on your team to show you are worth joining, hosting or whatever. The more your team can show they can MAKE something great instead of rambling on about it apparantly being great is incredibly important. -Be professional Spell and grammar check all your posts and work. The cleaner your text's appearance, the better. You don't want people mixing you up for some illiterate kid. -Get a website Something basic with a list of your aims and objectives of your campaign\mod is useful and shows you are organised. Having a complete design document or other work about it is even better. Get Dreamweaver and a basic layout from freesitetemplates.com -Don't ask for... Don't ask for Beta Testers, voice actors or a Website host or maker if your campaign is NOT FINISHED. You do NOT need them at this moment. You'll be wasting people's time, including your own, getting testers, actors or a webmaster sorted. These sorts of people aren't needed at this early stage of design or construction. -Have a consistent story In StarCraft's day, people much preferred campaigns set in Blizzard's universe and ones that were consistent - i.e. they didn't use Blizzard's heroes and make them do totally out-of-character or just do stuff they'd never do. There were good campaigns of this type, as there are always exceptions, though, but it's usually better to be careful and even original. People don't like a story involving Arthas marrying Thrall and then the world blows up. -Have fun You're not getting paid for this, most likely - so just focus on having fun. That's why you're doing it. :) Hope that helps. |

heh, Arthas and Thrall.... about the grammar thing though, follow your own advice, not to be a jackass, just thought I'd mention it, the next tip. I have seen on the sound artistry forum a bunch of people saying "I'm thinking about a campaign and I need voice actors." the voices I agree should be one of the last things to add. Edit: spelling, right after I mentioned something about Magic's, I spelled forum wrong, lol. |

Skull should indeed do more than the easy work of designing a story (though keeping this site going is an impressive task :)). The rest of the admin here would do well to perform more quality assurance (Testing). |

See I cant model or texture. I cant do complex triggers. I'm profficient with the unit editor, and I trouble shoot like a badass. I make music, and dub voices and love terrain design, and I love coming up with epic stories. But these skills, thus far have gotten me no where. I really want to make a campaign, but I dont have the skills necessary to really be a big part of it. I mean most people need sound guys, and thats cool, but all the places I post thus far either havent payed attention or dont care about the skills that I do have. I decided that before I tried to make my own campaign, I would work on some others to get some experience, but that aint working out too well so far......... |
