IMO materia was the best system. It was quick and easy to use and figure out. You don't really want too complex of a system because that will just make more work for you and then in turn for the players to figure it out. Materia works well it was easy to use and I think it would be the easiest for you to implement.

I liked Chrono trigger's learn skills with levels then combine them wiht team mates. I swaer i used Ice sword 2 on lavos' core like 50 times. But out of that list, i'd say materia was cool 'cause you could make the sucky people suck less just by giving them some good materia.

Materia remove the purpose of having character class tho.

Im using a mix:
You equip a gear with cure on it. Then the character can cast cure, if he remove the gear, he cannot. BUT theres a learning system, Each magic will have a preset AP needed to be fully learned so you dont need to wear the gear to cast that magic. Each battle you may get 1-5 AP that are substracted to the current value of a magic, once the value of a magic reach 0, you mastered it.
Its might look like ff9 by the look but the difference is you dont have those little "stone" which restrict the number of magic you can cast.

-You can cast a magic if you are wearing a gear with the magic on it OR if it has been mastered.

Theres a type of gear called accessory, its doesnt raise strength,speed... of a character, it will have some influence like a materia did. I was thinking that magic on a accessory cant be learned so you have to equip the accessory to cast it. Accessory wont be easy to find in the game.

-You need an accessory to cast a special magic.

Theres another type of magic called "skill". Those magic are unique to each character and will need something like level, kill or quest to be learned.

-Need level, kill or quest to cast the skill.

Im not sure if I should make a class for Summon. Currently, summon are part of skill(very few of them in the game, each character ultimate skill is a summon).
I dont know if I should use the system of Legend of dragoon(metamorph in a special dragoon unique to each character) instend of summon.

EDIT:
There will be 20 magic(maybe 16 normal and 4 special), 32 skill(4 per character) and 20 item.

By adding Attack and Defend to the list, this means there will be 74 different action in the game!
