I wrote the first two parts of this story. Basically, it will (I haven't finished it yet) tell the story of this Undead Soldier who, being released from the Lich King's control, decides to attempt and re-discover his past. Please give some feedback. _*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_ These were the last things I remember seeing, hearing and feeling...The very last feelings that I manifested before being plunged into something which seemed to be an eternal sleep...An eternal sleep of darkness and death, from which I thought never to awaken from... People crowded around me...The noises of men in armor clambering about the room...The noises of soldiers charging cannons...I heard nervous screaming coming from the city...Noises of footsteps came from everywhere...And then I remember the image of a man...Standing straight, fearless, this old warrior spoke words of encouragment to his men...Words which I can't remember...As he finished his glorious speech, he lifted his blade upwards, towards the sky...And in response the soldiers lifted theirs while cheering strongly... I remember that the gates slowly opened, and that in the distance, deformed figures could be spotted...Carried with the marching soldiers, I ran towards these figures...And then the horrible sight came...Thousands of walking corpses ran towards us...Gigantic beasts made of sown-up remains slaughtered men by the hundred...Horrifying flying beasts swooped down, catching in their deformed jaws the men in battle...Metallic Machines, from which a horrible odor emanated, launched the remains of the warriors onto the ones who were still standing...Evil Sorcerors used dark magics to bring back in servitude the ones who had been horribly murdered...I recall fighting off a seemingly infinite army of corpses...I remember thrusting my blade through the bodies of at least ten of the evil sorcerors...I remember striking at the flying monsters...But it was soon all to finish...I remember feeling a horrible pain...And when turning around...One of those gigantic beasts composed of bodies...I remember that it swung a cleaver at my chest... I remember looking towards the horizon, to contemplate, in flames, the city I apparently swore to defend...As I observed, a feeling of despair fell upon me, and as all became dark, tears were shed from my eyes... -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- For as long as I can remember after that, everything was dark around me. I could not see, I could not feel, I could not smell or think. I was surrounded by shadows, unable to control my own body and unable to have my own feelings...The only thing I knew for sure was that I was not dead. My soul had not been left to rest in peace...I remember that while I stood in this apparent sleep, a strange, cold whisper guided my actions...What this whisper said I can not recall, but I remember that it stood in the place of my own free will... This all lasted for what seemed an infinity. I was being controlled, my soul was not left to sleep in peace...It seemed like an endless nightmare...Until the day when the whisper began to grow weaker and weaker...As the whisper grew fainter and fainter, my self-control began to re-appear...After a short span of time, I had regained sight and was able to hear around me...But what I saw was worse than the nightmare itself... I stood now in an area where the ground was dead. As I turned my head around slowly, to see the surroundings, I saw once again horrors; dead stood, walking about, roaming the area. A spire to my right had a crystal on it's peak. Around this crystal a swirling cataclysm of ghostly shapes could be seen. Gigantic bat-like beasts flew over in the sky, dropping from their filthy mouthes bodies of murdered innocents. From a suspicious building monsters of gigantic stature emerged. They clawed the air with their numerous arms, and they walked about in a clumsy manner, always seeking to maintain the balance of their disproportionate bodies. In some their stomach was split open, leaving space for their decaying internal organs to flop out and shake as these creatures marched. Horrifying spider-like beasts, with numerous eyes and legs, burrowed into the ground. To my left I saw a grouping of walking deformities, who were bringing into this terrorizing region dead bodies of men and women. I contemplated as they began to, with their claws and their mouthes, to tear apart the hides of the dead and gulped the meat down into their throats. -“Can't...Can't...No...Can't Be... I shook my head quickly as I said this. -“This...This isn't true... One of those deformed creatures came up to me, smiled with the teeth it had left and gave off this grunting noise. In the teeth it had left, I could still see human blood and meat hanging off from them... Desperate, scared and confused, I ran to the closest shelter I could find: a small opening between a group of trees. There, I sat down, trying to catch my breath, trying to understand the things I saw. As I lifted my hands, I saw something which disgusted me... My hands were there, right before my sight. From the small amount of my skin which was still left emerged worms and parasites, who took bites at my dead hand. My right hand was not better either, as on this hand there was no skin left. I could see the muscles and, in some areas, the bones themselves. The muscles were turning of a brownish, dark color, and flies flew around this exposed piece of meat. I contemplated this disgusting spectacle for some time, until I lifted myself up and roamed the forest, trying to believe in what I was seeing. As I delved deeper and deeper into the forest, I found a small river, whose crystalline water formed some puddles along it's way. I bent down, and looked into the pond... An empty socket on the right side, and a bulging eye on the left. The skin and the muscle of my right cheek had dissapeared, leaving a hole from which I could see my throat. My nose was gone. Only two small slits remained. My mouth, whose lips had dried, turning into a grey-ish color, had but three teeth left in it. In my reflection in the lake I could see that my skull had been slightly crushed, causing a deformity in the shape of my head. In my chest was a big opening, but the inside of my body had already decayed, leaving only my skeleton to be seen. -“What are you doing? By hearing this, I froze in place. I slowly tilted my head to the sides, but I saw no one. -“Once again I will ask...What are you doing? I remained still. Suddenly, I felt a piercing cold on the back of my neck. As I turned around, I was thrown headfirst into the puddle by some mysterious force. I lifted myself, pulling my head out of the water. And what I saw was dreadful but incredible at the same time. A skeletal figure stood, floating a few centimeters over the ground. From it's hip to a few centimeters over the floor extended a black skirt, which was made to float by some strange magic. Black horns protuberated from its skull, and a blueish light came out of this creature's skull, spewing out of all the openings in the skull. Chains hanged from it's wrists, and they extended until they touched the floor. He wore golden bracelets on his horns, and his skirt was ornated by strange glowing jewels. And then, as I stared at this creature in amazement, it spoke to me in a cold-toned voice: -“I shall not ask you again. What were you, a servant of the Lich King, wandering around the forest for? -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- |

Here is the third chapter. It's quite long... -"I..." The floating skeleton continued to look at me. It slowly lifted one of his skeletal hands, and with that movement he brought me up, making me float in the air. -"What brought you to come into the woods?" I replied in a low voice. -"I...I don't know" Slowly, the skeleton lifted his second hand, and held my neck strongly with it. A few seconds later, I felt once again a strong cold that invaded my body...He pressed it harder, and the cold grew stronger. I no longer felt the parts of my body, and I remained there, afloat, feeling the frost expand from my neck to my toes. -"Are you sure you serve the Lich King...? You might as well be a corpse animated by Human Mages..." I continued not replying, as my mouth would not open. My lips began to freeze, and my body no longer responded my movement. As the creature continued to hold it's grasp on my neck, I heard beating wings in the sky. Thousands of small bats flew in circles above the trees. Suddenly, the skeleton relesed my neck, and turned his head to the skies. As the number of the bats increased, they began to descend towards the earth, and once they touched the ground, they began to form a shape. Soon, the bats were gone, but the creature that stood in the place where they had flown to was nonetheless frightening. It's face was as pale as snow, and it's eyes were of a deep red, like a lake of blood. It wore a shining black armour, which covered most of it's body. From it's hands extended long nails, which were sharpened as to cut through metal in a single strike. In it's mouth stood long white teeth, and from behind it's back, dark, leathery wings extended. It stood, slowly beating it's wings, and as it approached the skeleton, it smiled lightly. -"Well, Ra'Mek, finally beginning to lose your patience towards the minions of the Scourge?" The skeleton, Ra'Mek, gave the creature a horrible look. And then he said serenely. -"Romadar, I have the right to do as I please. It will not be a subordinate of the Burning Legion who will tutor me." The bat-like beast gave off a deep, dark laugh, and then quickly replied. -"It is true indeed...But you know very well that the Scourge is the Burning Legion's. Thus, I do not believe I should permit you to put your hands on this...Warrior of the Scourge". Ra'Mek put his both hands down, causing me to tumble down from the air into the puddle once again. -"You shall not continue to mock the powers of the Lich King for long..." With that, Ra'Mek glided away into the darkness of the forest, and before I knew it, he was gone. I stared at the bat-like fiend who called himself Romadar. Calmly, he shifted his head downards to look at me, and he gave off a light smile. -"I do not know what were your workings here, and I do not wish to. Make haste to leave this place and return to your charge..." Romadar's body began to turn thinner and thinner, as it turned round and round, ascending into the air. In a second, his body exploded into a million little bats, who flew away, leaving me alone once again... I lifted my decaying body up, still feeling the stings of the cold that Ra'Mek had shot upon me. I continued to roam in the forest, with many questions afloat in my head. What was this that both had called 'The Scourge'? Was I a part of it? Was the whisper in my head connected to this? And who was this creature they called the 'Lich King'? But the persistant question in my head was what I had been? My memory had been broken and split into millions of shards, and I did not know how I was going to reconstitute them. Few memories still flew in and out of my mind, although they were blurry and unclear. As night fell, I was still walking along the trees, and I could see the moon's light showering onto my disgusting body through the openings between trees. I stood there, contemplating my destroyed arms and gruesome legs until I heard distant cries. I stared in the direction of these cries, and I saw a long pillar of smoke rising in the distance. Not knowing what was hapenning, I mindlessly raced towards the smoke. And when I arrived, I saw an entire village. Embers were raining from the sky as some soldiers fought against creatures I could not identify. What I knew was that they needed help, and so I ran towards the town... Coming closer to the fire, I was able to discover what the attackers were. Hundreds of those walking corpses I had spotted earlier raced towards the city, and the soldiers fought bravely against them. I spotted those monsters composed of human pieces, and the Evil Mages of my last memory that were constantly bringing back the fallen warriors. I turned my head towards the moon, but what I saw then was even more terrible... Standing on a cliff was the skeleton I knew as Ra'Mek. He was standing there, waving his hands as in a spell. I saw some soldiers who approached him become instantly captured in ice, and those who managed to get close enough as to strike at him were harmed by the intense cold which emanated from his body. As I contemplated the terrifying spectacle, I noticed that the blue fire that spewed out of his skull turned suddenly of a vivid red. I also noticed that his whole body began to glow of this color, and I felt something horrible was about to occur... With a wave of his hand, a gigantic poison cloud appeared on the battlefield. At first, I did not see what this could do apart than blind the soldiers...But then I saw the real objective of this curse. All the warriors, from the dead corpses to the soldiers, began to fall dead. I saw them struggle in the mysterious fog, until by some unknown reason they would fall dead to the ground. I noticed also that all the trees in the proximity of this cloud began to die, until they broke and fell upon the ground. Horrifyied by this massacre, I tried to run back into the woods. At that precise moment, a swarm, millions of bats swooped down and gathered around me as in a whirlwind. I was lifted off the ground and taken to the clifftop where the Skeleton Sorceror lied...When I arrived, the bats dropped me off and formed into Romadar. -"Well, Well...What do we have here?", said Ra'Mek in a provocative voice. -"Although I let you escape Ra'Mek's angry hands, I thought I told you to go back to your charge...", said Romadar. I looked desperately around me, looking for a way of escape. But the cliff was surrounded by skeletons armed with swords and shields. -"The Scourge needs to be purged of useless trash like that...", said Ra'Mek. Romadar looked Ra'Mek as if he agreed slightly. He then waved his hand, and skeletons came by with chains. They chained me to the cliff, and then Romadar said: -"Although you are part of the Scourge and thus part of the Burning Legion, I must agree with Ra'Mek that your behaviour is...peculiar. I believe it was a mistake to save you after all...You shall be sacrificed and the Ghouls shall eat your remaining members". He then once again became a swarm of bats who flew off in random directions. Then Ra'Mek looked upon me and once again with a provocative voice said: -"Contemplate the arts of the Scourge. Look upon that burning city, destroyed by an army of reanimated corpses and tormented spirits. I am a proud servant of this army...But you are visibly not. Look at the invulnerable swarm that will consume the world...And you throw away your chance to participate in it..." With that, Ra'Mek waved his hands. The corpses marched out of the burning village, victorious, stained with blood and taking bodies and pieces of soldiers. It was very late in the night. I stood there, alongated in the ground of the cliff, immobile. The chains bound me to the ground, and the moonlight shone upon my body. 'By dawn the Ghouls shall come to devour you alive'. Those were Ra'Mek's last words to me before he floated out of the cliff and into the depths of the forest. I was forced to lay there, wandering about how I came to become this and what I had been before. I closed my eye's, trying to build the puzzle of my destroyed memory. The image's that floated before me were disturbing. In the first one, I saw something orange and blurry...Like a flame. This flame was dancing in the corner of what seemed to be a house, and next to it seemed to be a child. This child was playing with a wooden sword, thrusting it randomly at the air. The second image that came to me was in the same location; except this time there was no kid with a sword, but a tall man dressed in armour. He lifted himself up from a chair, and hugged a woman and a small child who was holding tightly onto his leg. After hugging both, the man exited through the door, and the woman began to weep. The last image was the only one I could see clearly. It was my last memory; I stood in the middle of swarms of monsters, of walking corpses, slashing them into pieces. Then one of those massive creatures composed of corpses came to me and impaled me with his weapon...and all went dark. As I lay there chained to the cliff, I focused on this memory...The memory of the massive battle...As I viewed it over and over in my head, I tried to remember who I was, why I was battling and who were the woman and the child... All of a sudden, a shadow covered the moonlight. I looked up to see what it was, but in a second the figure was on the ground, with the skeletons that were guarding me dead around it. -"Who are you?", I asked. The figure turned around. In the darkness of night, the only thing I could see were two big eyes, which glowed in a yellow color, and it's shining claws, which shone in a deep blue. I opened my mouth in horror, but no sound came out. Before I knew it, the figure sprang into the air, and struck the chains that bound me with some strange magical power. The chains dissapeared into thin air, and I was free of my movements again. In a scared voice I replied to his acts. -"Thank...Thank you." The figure stared at me, and this time it's eyes became of a bright red. I was blinded by this light, until his eye color shifted from red to yellow again, and then shone in a light green. -"You are not like the others", the figure said. "You have your own will. You are not a slave to the Lich King". I looked upon him, with a look of confusion on my face. -"You are like me. You are free...To roam the world in search of answers to your past life". His eyes suddenly gave off a bright light and I was for a second able to see what he looked like. He stood in a curved formation, and a big hunch grew on his back. His chest was scarred, probably because of innumerous battles he fought. His body was of a light purple colour, but his arms, sown onto his body, were of a green color and were very muscular. His legs were long and thin, and at the end of his foot long nails extended outwards, and gave a gloomy grey glow. -"If I might ask a question...Why have you saved me?" With this question he narrowed his eyes, and the light from them was directed onto my face. -"I am no longer part of The Scourge. The Lich King's control over me has ended. I have found my senses and will once again, and I swore to save all the deformities like myself who were manipulated by this evil machination, The Scourge. I have observed you over the day...And I sense that you are also no longer under the Lich King's control. This was confirmed by your imprisionment, and that is why I have saved you..." As I looked once again upon this deformity like myself who had saved me, I heard a rustling in a nearby tree. I turned around to see what It was, but I was blinded by the light: the light of the rising sun. I soon understood; out of the nearby trees, fifteen or sixteen of those walking corpses sprang out. -"Ghouls!", my saviour exclaimed. He quickly sprang towards them, and in one slash of his claws he exterminated three of them. The remaining Ghouls looked in amazement, but they quickly threw themselves onto him, and began to claw at his chest. Confused and terrorised, I quickly ran to the remains of the skeletal guards. I took from their remains both a sword and a shield, and I sprang to battle the fiends... |

You have an excellent fluid style and the story is interesting. Keep up the good work. |

-"Shoot the Mortar!" A loud explosion was heard, and pieces of rock flew in all directions. At that instant, millions swarmed through the gate. They were armed head to toe with weapons and armor. -"It doesn't seem to be going well, sir". The soldier looked up concerned. -"They can't be infinite or invulnerable. There is surely a way to defeat them". -"Well sir, the 2nd and 3rd battalions have already left the city to battle, but the enemy continues it's advance". -"Are the 4th and 5th battalions armed and ready to fight?" -"Sir, most of the weaponry was given to the 1st and 2nd battalion. Out of 1,000 men in the 5th batallion, only 700 are fully armed, and in the 4th batallion with 1,300 men, only 900 are fully ready to go to battle. The soldier began to tap his foot onto the ground nervously. -"Tell the Captain of our situation". -"Yes sir". The soldier left off running, as he unsheathed his sword. I looked up nervously onto the ceiling. Soon, the 4th and 5th batallion, along with myself, were standing outside the Barracks in the town center. The captain was standing on a pedestal, as he mumbled numbers to himself. He raised his sword and all the people in the center grew quiet. -"As you all know", he began, "The enemy has not stopped it's progression. No news has been acquired concerning the 1st and 2nd battalions, and the enemies are very close to this city. But, we have sworn to protect this land with sword and shield! These fiends spewed out of hell shall not, I repeat, never destroy our city!" A loud excitement took control of the crowd, and they began to cheer loudly. Once again, the captain lift his sword, and he continued his speech. -"This city has standed for long, and shall not fall now! It has been built with the hands of our ancestors, and we shall defend this work bravely! If we are to fall and die, let it be in battle! Our souls might never have eternal rest, but we will know we did the best we could! Honor the 2nd and 3rd batallion! Let us battle...and win! He lifted the sword up, pointing it towards the skies. The crowd cheered loudly, and soon all the soldiers were holding their weapons up...The gates were opened, and out swarmed the soldiers, running to their dooms... I slashed and stabbed at the hordes of walking corpses...I slashed, stabbed, cut through, impaled...Before I knew it, I was surrounded by the fiends...Surrounded by hundreds...thousands...millions...and then a cleaver cut through my back, and I fell into the ground as everything around me turned black...and in the moments before I died, I saw before me a picture...A woman sitting on a rocking chair...She held a small baby in her arms...A Man standing next to her, caressing the baby's head...Was that...Me? Everything came back into focus. I stood there, bathing in the rising sun's rays...The beast who had saved me stood there, eyes wide open, staring at me...I looked around, my vision still blurry...There they were. the thirteen or fourteen Ghouls, all cut through, impaled, with marks of deep sword cuts in their bodies...And I stood, holding a shield in one hand and a sword in the other, surrounded by the remains of the undead... -"By all gods...", whispered my saviour to himself. Suddenly an intense pain rushed through my head, as if a sword had just gone through it. Instantly, I began to remember...My name, my age...I was Alaworn Galestrike, a warrior of nine years of experience. I was twenty-five...Or at least I had been. I tried to excavate more memories, to discover the meaning or the name of the woman and the child...But the memories came no more. -"I...Did I do this?" The creature who saved me gave a light nod, and then spoke. -"My name is Nerkros, and I am like you, a free mind. I have seen you fighting and I have no more doubt...You are indeed free of the Lich King's manipulation..." I tried to understand what had happened. I remember having sprung onto the Ghouls, but after that... -"What hapenned? I don't remember..." -"You sprang onto the Ghouls", said Nerkros. "And then with sword maniating skills rivalling those of Knights you murdered every single one of them..." I looked in unbelief at the sword I had wielded, and I stared at the bodies dead on the ground. The ghouls I had apparently slaughtered looked no different than when they were alive. -"We'd best get moving. It won't take long until the next undead patrol walks by..." With that, Nerkros sprung into the forest. I stood there, not knowing what to do, not knowing what I was. I looked one last time into the sun, and I ran into the forest. |

| 03-04-2005, 10:18 PM | #14 |
No harm meant, I wrote this story almost 2 years before you wrote the Ghoul's diary. I didn't even know this was still alive, lol. Oh well. If it's still alive, I guess I'd best finish it. |
