Terrain questions

I've been wondering for quite some time now what the plateau and smooth functions in the terrain editor do. I did a very broad search in the tutorial section ("terrain"), and didn't get anything. Just wondering what they're for.

Also, is there a terrain tutorial?

... Why didn't you just TRY them?

I'm not sure (right now) of what the smooth is, but platoe levels the terrain after where you first clicked.

Do you honestly think that I posted that after merely looking at them? I did try them. I assumed that they had something to do with making better cliffs, such as the ones I have seen, most recently the one from the helms deep map that was asked to be criticized. Just wanted to know how to make terrain like that.

Ligature
Smooth takes the vertex you apply it to, checks all the vertices around it, finds the average height of all of them, then moves the target vertex closer to that average. In simple terms, it "evens out" the terrain you apply it to.

When you mouse-down with the plateau tool it remembers the height of the vertex you pressed down on. Then as you drag around, it applies that height to all vertices you drag over.

Thank you.

Any advice as to how to make high-quality terrain walls, like the ones in the afformentioned topic?

Sure - use Draco's attachment in this thread

But you probably already knew that...?
