Can someone post some sort of guide to all the types of map that we have around?

Something along the lines of a list with small descriptions of what they are, and any known aconryms

eg:

TD - Tower Defence
Build towers (and units) to stop the oncoming stream of creeps from reaching the end point.

TD (Tower Defence): Create a masssive defence of towers to prevent the creeps gettin in to the "Golden Treasure"

TW (Tower Wars): This is like "TD" but here each player spawns creeps for an other player, that way each player can individually have an effect on the game of who is going to be defeat, or win.

Arena: 2 teams are created, each player gets to chose a hero from a big variaty. After the selection, each team has to fight eachother to gain level, and win the arena...

AoS: 2 Teams again, each player controls a hero, but the players get help from the computer that controls a big respawning army.

DotA: almost the same as the "AoS", exept from the custom made spells, and no Tomes to ruin the game (this game is very balanced, so there wont be any "super" hero).

RPG: All players select a character. After the selection an instruction is given, and the players gather their forces together to finish the great Quest

Open RPG: All players select a character. After the selection the Players wander around killing creeps and eachother (this gamestyle should be forbidden)

Mini Games: All players battle against eachother in a big variation of mini games, were the "most" winning player is the victorious

Racing: All players has a vehicle and race eachother to be the best racer of the realm...

BaseBall: Just like an ordinary baseball game (very funny to play)

well that was all i could think of

Thanks.

Is AOS (Aeon of Strife) an official type of game, or just something a group came up with for their style of map, and others followed suit?

A previous discussion or two along this topic has yielded the decision that the game type for AoS's is based on a map for StarCraft called Aeon of Strife. Thus, the genre is named for it's most famous progenitor. DotA is not a different type of game. Defense of the Ancients was the most popular Warcraft 3 AoS game for a long time. Successful balance and custom skills are not traits separate from an AoS style map.

I'm a little sketchy about Tower Wars being different from Tower Defense, but it's certainly an arguable point.

Footman Wars: Teams of players choose a race and a hero. Units of the race spawn at intervals and the players use them and their hero to try to get a strategic advantage over opposing teams, in order to destroy their structures and win.

Zone Control: Risk-like games where units are spawned at intervals based on how many "zones" you control. Control of a zone is given by killing whatever was in that zone. A player who controls a certain number of zones (usually all of them) is the winner.

Enhanced/Advanced/Altered melee: The goals are similar to standard melee Warcraft 3. However, the units, buildings, heros, skills, or gameplay functions have been extended or changed from the originals. Many people make maps with larger tech trees and more tiers, using the standard races. I made most of an Altered Melee that constructed four races and a different system of gameplay.

Loser Game: Some kid took a map and inserted cheats or exploits, or created a ridiculously unfair map of any kind from scratch, and expects you to play it all the time and lose against him/her/it.

That last one might not be an officially recognized map type. :Heh:

'Yummy pix' maps: A place where sad old men and horney 12 year olds show how stupid people can be.

Something Orginal: An evil map type that should be ignored at all costs

Something Complex: similar to Something Orginal, can cause great stress because you dont understand, if you begin to feel panicky shout "this map is gay!", insult someone, call someone else a noob and leave.

____Mauls: not to be confused with TD's these maps involve sitting in a dull stupour and building 27 of the same tower in the hope of eventually losing and being able to leave.

(anything) tag: Run if a small thing, Chase if Big.
