I am making a campaign and was wondering if I could use some of the Diablo 2 sounds for unit voices, etc. I can extract them and all, but want I want to know is - is this legal? Am I allowed to do it or are they copyrighted? |

Yes it is legal...-just don't claim it as your own work =) |

Actually it is not legal. Then again using a track from for example Metallica in a map is also not legal. The point is the companies normally see no harm in it. But look what happend to the SC 2 WC2 TC when they used Warcraft grahpics, since Blizzard didn't like people thinking that that mod might be some sort of WC3 they shut it down. Point is, the can shut you down, if they want. |

Right, probably not worth the risk for a couple of sounds! |

maybe it is legal.... if your not selling it and as long as you give credits and is original maybe it isnt legal.... you may be hacking into the game, which i think just isnt right anyways, not giving credits isnt illegal but they will get very PISSED at you, and selling it will get you in trouble because you dont have any signed documents and that cr@p.... so basically, you need to ask blizzard, not us:D |

Like I said earlier. It is their property, they can shut you down if your making money or not. They just don't mind a lot of the times. But if you rip wav's... no good. If I make a great campaign with new units, and someone rips the units, but does NOT make a profit. I can still sue their ***. |

Excuse me but they won't give a damn, really. (Pardon my french) Enhancing your map with their other resources is just showing them that you like it =) They won't take legal action unless you sell your map and/or take credit for creating the sounds yourself. Alot of people use Blizzard related media and they don't give f**k all. |

A lot do, but there have been some things shut down and you know it. I already gave the example of the SC > WC2 conversion. They can. |

Because that is an obvious act that will lower the sales of Blizzard games. |

Point is they can. You don't want that risk. I had a risk like that with some other copyrighted material, you want your own stuff dewd. |

Nearly every mapmaker I know uses sounds from other games. It's all freeware (Their work - they don't sell it) so there's no need for companies to get bothered, or even notice. Blizzard isn't going to pay for or bother to write a legal letter to be wrote just for someone using Diabo sounds. So go ahead, I say. Said SC Conversion was of a bigger priority anyhow. |

its legal. your not doing any harm to them. it like downloading music from kazaa. you can download all you want but you can't sell it, share it, or distribute it to others. Thats how the RIAA defines it |
| 12-31-2003, 11:45 AM | #13 |
It is illegal, like Magic said. They just don't bother. If I were to DL of KaZaA and the RIAA finds it on my comp, I am ****ed. |

it is illegal if you take it from other blizzard games because...you had to pay for those games..and if you take stuff from say diablo and put in warcraft then your giving someone resources they didn't pay for in that game..i think that's why SC conversion was shut down.. |

I assume it is illegal ONLY if you and/or the person obtaining the map doesn't have the game which the sounds were ripped from. Because it's like your giving away the game, be it in small pieces or the whole thing at once. |
