I'd like to create a new race (preferrably selectable for melee) without overwriting one of the others. Is this possible? If so, how might I go about this?

This is probably possible, but no-one has figured out to yet.

What has been managed on the subject:
  • Changing race names
  • Changing race units
  • Adding new races to the choice menu (but they don't do anything)

Hmmm... Then, is it possible to change the starting units of a race (for melee)?

The name can be changed?

You can change the names of races, but only if you make a full-blown mod. Check the Tales of Raviganion forums and ask about it there. They did it.

And you can change the starting units in the editor. But it is buggy to actually change starting unit triggers.

What I'm trying to do here is to make the non-playable WC3 races (Naga, Draenei etc) playable in a melee map. What I need to know is:

A: Can I create a new race for these units (already answered as 'no')?
and B: If not, how can I change the starting units of one race to those of the other (ex: changing the Great Hall and 5 Peons to a Haven and 5 Labourors), preferrably without bugs :) ?

I have a friend who was able to make a new race using the mac version of WE, but I don't know if this means it has to be possible on PC...

first off.. u can just use a base race for ur editing.. and just change the model of lets say the peon. to the guy u want.. he will be able to do the same stuff as a peon can do.. just change the things he builds and so one.. same with buildings.. and any other units.. just give them diffrent names.. and change their models..

your units are there. i don't know how much more you want to add. Think about it. The naga already have a techtree, i'm not sure if you played the campaign all the way through *bets you did* but the draeni and the naga have techtrees, though not as large as a normal race. and does anyone know which file holds the strings for the names of the races are stored, for when your selecting a race out of the chose race little dropdown tab? Oh and is the file a txt or a slk?

those races have too little of a techtree and unbalanced, so you would need to do something to them

Never thought of changing unit names/pics.... I might try that...

I can do things to them, like requiring a bit more tech before getting, say, the Sirens or Royal Guards (which I edited in to the Pool building), but I feel tension here, like there is a way to do what I'm trying to do (change base units), but it takes some doing, or there's something you can't tell me... I have time and am willing to try it out, if only I could figure out how... If I'm wrong then I guess I'll just have to flush my intuition down the toilet :) .

Creating a new race is reasonably easy. You don't need to over-write a origional one, just make loads of new units, setup a techtree, and get the race to work. But then you'll have to use triggers to have selection work. That too is easy, just use our good friend the dialogue box. Unfortunately this use of triggers will stop it being an official Melee map, but you can still use the melee triggers to make it play like one.

I can do about anything in the Obj editor as long as it DOESN'T require triggers to do (some custom spells etc), but if you need help with that I'd be glad to help.

The Gnolls? So you must've at least changed the starting units. If you didn't just edit the existing buildings please tell me how you did it...

PS I found the Naga Melee map in your map archives and am looking through it to see what makes it tick, maybe I'll find something...
