Do you use the art tools? The error you mentioned comes often when you are using the impexp script.

What do u mean "use the art tools"? I use the impexp script. Is there any other way to export a model?

www.blizzard.com

They exported the art tools they used for creating the wc3:RoC models. If you want a 100% functional exporting script, use that.

There is a readme included (well, a pdf help file) whch helps you get your model exported for sure

Good luck

i had similar problems exporting a model with the art tools. 3ds just crashed when writing the .blp files. the previewer rendered it fine, but the exporter just crashed it.
in the end i rewrote the .tga file in photoshop completely and then it worked. still don't know what was wrong about the original texture.

try to apply a simple texture from what you know it will work. if the exporter does not crash, it's something wrong with the .tga file
