making a chain unit

The only real example ive seen was in a map called worm war, which i studied but its really damn complicated, more so than what i need. Anyhow, I want to have one unit appear, move a short distance, have another appear and become attached to the first, and so on as they move forward. After that all they have to do is move in a straight line for a while. Id like to have individual segments be able to be killed without breaking the chain. The context this is in is a caravan exiting a cave one part at a time and moving across the better part of a map where players could kill any of the pieces without stopping the train

Ligature
Just use a unit array and have each unit in the array follow the unit directly below it in the chain - then controlling the first unit will cause all the rest to follow.

Then have a trigger that takes a dying unit out of the array, bumps all the units above it in the chain down a notch and orders them all to follow the unit below them in the chain again.

or try to figure out that Kodo Caravan from RoC campaign....they used alot of regions as i recall it called "bread-crums" or something like that and forced the units to move to the next region blabla....it's complicated :)

or do the ligatures array thingy...depends on what u need it for...

The Kodo Beast Caravan & Magical Wagon Caravan from WC3 and TFT used 'breadcrumb #' regions.
