Guys you`r great in sound editing. So maybe you`ll tell me what does this registry keys do:
donotusewaveout
nomidi
nosoundwarn
softwaremidi
All they are located in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Warcraft III\Sound
Thanks a lot.

donotusewaveout <- I'm not sure, but I think this one disables the waveout "API" and makes WC3 use DirectSound. It certainly not disables the sound.
nomidi <- if this is enabled, MIDI will be disabled. In WC3 midi is used for some environmental effects (also only a guess, I'm not sure if it works).
softwaremidi <- I think this controls, whether MIDI sound will be processed a hardware or a software renderer.

As you see, I can only guess. Maybe I will test these values to give you a more accurate answer.

Maybe one of these Midi values could be set so we don't need that huge dls file to enable custom Midi files.

Can you test it?

turning on NO Midi resulted in the ambient sound not playing and the other value didn't change anything obvious

U`r not quite right. At first I thought it is a warning when your units are under attack or some research have been completed. But there is such a thing: when I play some music with winamp and then launch War3 it gives me a message that there is no sound card on my computer. It seems to me that sound card is busy with winamp and can do only one job at a time. I have an old sound blaster and i`m sure that modern sound cards has no such errors. So if I turn NoSoundWarn to 0 no messages appear but there is still no sound in the game.

that's why I said the changes were not obvious for me, coz I don't have that problem

I`ve just checked nomidi as you`ve said, but I heard no difference. What do you mean when you say ambidient?

It's the music in the background which is the only midi part in warcraft sounds.

You may notice the difference, if you disable the game music. nosoundwarn was obvious, but I never had problems like this either.
