Attatching animations via Geomerging

is there a way to per say geomerge 2 units than attach specific bones to mirroring bones, like you want your swordsman to swing like he has an axe so you decide to add him to a grunt model, then you make the grunt model invisible. Is there a way to give him those attack animations by like attaching specific bones?
