I'm trying to change a few things on the UnitAbilities.slk file so I opened it up on Microsoft Excel and all I get is random symbols on every slot. Is there something I'm missing?

I use Excel 97 and it works. Perhaps you just had a screwed up export?

i had similar problem once...
well, all i need is copy the original wc3 storm.dll in the same directory as the mpq extractor or winmpq...
and then i can extract the files without random symbols after that.

ok, that helped much. Now its appearing normally. Next question would be, after I edit the file, how do I add it to a specific map? WinMPQ crashes if I try to add the slk file to a map file directly.

Better yet, anyone know where the full tutorial to adding it back in is so I don't take too much more of your time.

It's a DOS program, you can't work it by dobleclick. Use a dos prompt, or TechMPQ.

just make a text file, type the commandos like the one wei mentioned, rename the file to .bat and run it. Voila. The advantage of this method above using the window interfaced one is that it is much faster to repeat. Cos every time you modify the map in the world editor the reference to the custom imported files will be lost. So when you have a bat file containing the right commands you can re-add them after you modified your map whenever you like.
