I've done all the steps to unwrap it now I just need the file format changed to something I can edit in photoshop. How does one do this?

for gmax what you can do really easily is just be viewing your uvws and take a screen shot using print screen. Then go into adobe, crop, resize then skin to your hearts content.

texporter is not availiable for gmax... Also for such small resolution skins like the ones for wc3.. It is better to just take screenshots. Texporter only captures faces facing the 'camera' so there can be missing polys sometimes depending on how you unwrap it.

Textporter is more accurate, and you can untick the :backface cull" box, then you get all faces, and btw, it does work with gmax
