Try looking in the download section/map editing tools before asking and expecting others to do your work for you |

one of the best ways to have map that no one wants to steal is when its done just convert all the triggers to jass. Map n00bs will go crazy about weres the gui! Unless you know jass well your self you may want to also make a none jass version of your map befor you convert and save. |

Actually, `3DGuy is. :P Just to interject, I don't think protection is good, open source all the way. (Just my 2 cents, I guess....) |

I *would* say that as well, if it were not for 90% of lame Bnetters that would love to do nothing but slime their name all over it. |

I'm all for open source, but Hunter0000 is right. What I would do is release the protected version for a few months, then release the unprotected version, that way you get your recognition and then they can have their fun. |

People with map unprotectors should relize that the map is protected for a reason. |

Always protect your map, if you want to show how you did your things make demo maps or that stuff, There are always morons that will try to add cheats / screw your map |

The point of map protection is generally the people that do go through the trouble to unprotect the map respect the reasons it was protected. The one time i've seen a break of the protection of a popular map was to repair the damages caused by one of the patches. This arguement has come up in other sections before, is map protection breakable? Yes. Will the average name slimer go through the trouble to break the protection? No. Just on a personal note ever since i got a map protecter i protect all my maps just because generally i put 10s of hours of work into my maps (I don't wanna think about how much time ancient wars has racked up, i got a feeling its at least 40 hours if not a lot more) Its just the fact that when you spend a very large amount of time on something you wanna make sure some newbie doesn't compromise hours of work with a couple seconds of map editing. It is sad though that people that just honestly wanna see how you did certain things have to suffer because of this, it would be great if Blizzard or someone else could think of some kind of read only map. |

Just a couple more things I've heard this before from the pro-unproteced community "Wintermaul, Hero Arena, Footman Wars, ect. are all more popular than any other map, they served their purpose well: enjoyment of the game that runs them. They were all open, too." The only thing i have to say to this is a little story. After a while from the cross over from sc b.net to wc3 b.net this map called "footman wars" caught my attention. I had played golem maps on sc (the unrigged ones that were actually fun to play) and i since this "footman wars" was the dominant map being hosted i thought it was like golems. For some reason, my curosity didn't get the better of me for a while but when i finnally did play a version of footman wars (which i realize now was probably rigged), i had such a completly terrible time playing it that to this day i have never tried another footman wars map, i even usually leave a game after dl if it even looks like footman wars. (There are exceptions to this, but thats usually only because the host was a friend of mine or he made it sound interesting). The point of this is that i hated ONE rigged version so badly that i have severed myself from what is probably at least 40% of the custom maps being hosted on battle.net . If one rigged version can do that much damage to one person, think about how much damage 10 or maybe even 100 could do to a community. That is why you protect, especially if you're making something thats groundbreaking. The only other thing i wanna mention is that is if you're done with a map and aren't going to update it anymore, leaving it protected doesn't mean that its going to die. As long as you finalized it and left everything perfect and fine, it will live on as long as people find interest in it. Not as much because he made a sequel, but you can still see the final version of zoator tower defense being hosted, why?, because it was a great map. Zoator left it protected and it has yet to hurt anything. If nothing else unprotecting a final version could kill its popularity faster, if you take my story for example. The bottom line is just who do you want your map to live on in the hearts of? You can protect it and if its good it will live on in the hearts of true players of battle.net, or you can leave it unprotected you risk some newbie corrupting it, which will result also turn off your true fans, and your map will live on in the hearts of newbies and losers that like to play rigged maps. It goes back to the general arguement of wether we map makers should tailor our maps to the overall retarded, but larger community of newbies and 9 years olds, or make good maps that true battle.net players will enjoy. |
