Making DISBTNs

Being new to making icons, I'm yet to really figure out how to make DISBTNS.

I have been just converting the buttons to grayscale, but it seems that DISBTNs aren't supposed to have button edges.

Any help?

create a 60% opacity layer, paintbucket all black in it (so its above your icon layer) then go to your bottom layer, and paint black around the edges.

This is how I do it...

1 - Open your .bmp image
2 - Set brush tool to 10-15
3 - Create a new layer with 48% opacity
4 - Color over the whole image with black
5 - Create a new layer with 0% opacity
6 - Go around the edges with the brush and cover up the border
7 - Your done

Go to the layer with the actual picture, go into Brughtness/Contrast, set the brightness down approximately 1/4 back from the middle, go into Hue/Saturation, bring the saturation about half back from the middle, then make a new layer and use a brush size of around 40 and color the edges black.
