Opening/Closing Gates w/o Regions

What is the most efficient way, using the cleanest triggers to allow a race to have buildable gates that open only for his own team while near by, and close on thier own when no allied units are near by?

So this can't involve regions, unless they are self-creating and destructing ones (or one giant one covering entire map?), because a player could techinically build this anywhere that structures are buildable.

Does this make sense? I am not good with triggers, so i thought i'd ask here first, and see what you folks could come up with.

You'll need to rotate the gates after they're built.
