and where can i download a program to extract and convert skins?

Yeah, if it screws up, I reconvert it at the default settings. Also, since it's jpg format it has no alpha channel, which could be why it does that.

No, just convert it to a 32-bit tga, make sure you got an alpha channel, then convert it to .blp. If you don't have any program capable of such conversion you really need to get one :)
