basically what that means is that it will have no layers and no alpha channel
the alpha channel has to do with hiding things such as making part of the skin transparent.
Layers are just part of more advanced file types that allow you to hide, remove, and sort out different parts of a skin.
When you go to change your model to a .blp with the warcraft III viewer, it will add an opaque alpha layer if there is not one (in your case, there will not be one). All this means is that nothing will be hidden on the skin.
Most likely your getting this error because your saving as a .jpeg or .bmp
