New take on hero arena - good or bad?

One problem of HAs is that you basically have to make 20,000 new spells for all your heroes, and the majority of them will get totally ignored. The other problem is that you pretty much know what to expect and what to do about it, and the other guy can't do anything because he's only got 3 or 4 spells to learn.

So my Brave New Arena has no actual learnable spells at all. The heroes are very different from each other - the big ones have about five times as many hit points as the fast ones, some of them have a range of about three screens, some have slow moving projectiles that can be outrun, some fly, some burn mana on striking, steal mana, steal money and so on. But you can't learn spells when you level up.

There are "?" signs all over the arena; running over one gives you a weapon. The weapon you get is picked from a random pool, based on your character level. A level 1 hero will get a lot of rockets [weak], a level 50 hero gets stuff like lightning sentries and thunderstorms. The weapon goes in your inventory, and has only 1 shot. Use it, and it disappears. Obviously, there are no "normal" items that go in your inventory.

If you really really need a specific weapon, you can buy it in a shop. The only problem is that said shop is in the lava, and you take damage while shopping.

The weapons would range from long distance damage ["bone spirit" has infinite range], disabling spells ["maelstrom" makes people spin when attacked], melee helpers ["greater summoning" teleports the target hero to you and automatically attacks], debuffs, damage reflection, invis, invis detection, movement, attack buffs, etc.

All characters have innate invisibility and invulnerability spells, which cost mana, so it's not like you could ignore int altogether.

There would be about 50 weapons in the map.

Would this be good, or did I just have another bad idea?
