Updates...and then some (part 1)

Howdy folks,

Sorry to bump the PR news, but this post has been building for a while. Draco's been doing a bang-up job trying to calm the fears many of you have had over the Site Upgrade while we toiled, and I've taken a short break to try and answer as many unanswered questions as possible, confirm a few things and let you all in on a few of the new features still to come. This is a big post, so please take your time and read through it all before replying with a question. If you're still unsure of something, then by all means query/abuse/murder/etc.

Firstly, several of you have expressed concerns about layout. Some of these things have been taken on board and changed already. You may have noticed that the chainlinks between posts have been significantly shortened, although not altogether removed. Users who were having troubles viewing the site in Safari should now be able to view it fine. "Last edited by.." tag has been been fixed as has posting timestamp (although that will probably be changed a little, still). The various post button options (Post reply, add buddy, search for all posts by user, quote etc.) will be soon replaced with buttons that match the font of the ones in the header. Oh..and you've all probably noticed that there are more avatars to choose from other than that awful sheep :p. Now, while I'm on the topic of avatars: At present you are not able to choose a customised avatar, and new ladder avatars are unlocked by postcount. Once the point system is running (more on that soon) this will change. The alternative that we are currently discussing and will more-than-likely go ahead with is as follows:
• Avatar ladder will run on points, rather than posts.
• Once you reach the top of the ladder, you will be able to unlock the ability to select custom avatars.
• Once you have unlocked the custom avatar option, you will not need to purchase it again to change your avatar. You will be able to change it as often as you like, inlcuding going back to the ladder.
The amount of points needed has not been decided upon yet, but it will not be unfathomably high. We're aiming that an average user can have their own custom avatar within a month's time. Those who participate more actively within the community will obviously get one faster, and it's not unreasonable to suggest an active member could have one within a week.

Some of you have expressed (in less-than-appreciative words) concerns to revert to the old layouts. Unfortunately, that is not a possibility. While certain parts may not appeal to some of you, we are trying our best to modify things to satisfy the majority of people. I noticed a post expressing concern about the amount of css being adopted in the header of every page. While the default VBB.3-generated css will remain, customised css will be moved to a separate stylesheet after the majority of the site is set up. This is not, however, one of our main concerns at the current time and will be addressed once we are satisfied with more urgent issues.
Yes, the header looks kinda bland at the moment. However, once the updated code to loop the top ten latests posts is completed it will be embedded into the header, the rest of it's templating will be all prettied-up and duplicated for the whole site.

Downloads: The downloads section is now officially back up and running. Hopefully there aren't any bugs, but if you do encounter problems, please let us know. As of now points will not be distributed for download submissions until the store is online.

Tutorials: The tutorials section, as many of you have noticed, is still down. The old VBB.2 tutorials section was a bit yich, so I'm coding a new one from scratch. I'm hoping that we can standardise the layout for tutorials, so it's likely that someone will be put in charge to manage, proofread and edit submitted tutorials. Whatever the case, the new tutorials section should be up within the next few days...*crosses fingers*.

Hmm...
All I can say is: "'Bout time there's an update on how the site upgrade is progressing!"

;)
Neato. How about making points per post? I didn't see that in your little essay up there, forgive me if it is... :\

What! This is an outrage; this better not be in effect yet! If it is, then I'm going to go insane! I've been helping out on the forums day and night just to get to 100 measly posts to get a decent avatar, and now you proclaim points arn't based on posts, and points, instead of posts, are now required for the avatar ladder?
Preposterous!

Lol I hate the dark red with dark green. You need black! And anyways, the user control panel profile thing on the top should be spaced out - too cluttered.

I hope this joint looks like the old and new - with the best of both.

Zethiros:

Ofcourse we're not giving points per post. That's just silly and that's the things we're trying to change from the old system. And it's the same reason we won't have Avatars based on Posts. ....

Becouse it causes and rewards "SPAM". It'd only be a matter of time untill people would start spamming to get better avatars. And the problem with the first point system was that it was overinflated. (and to a certain edge, it caused spam (f.ex. a spam of low-quality download submissions)

Anyhow

If you indeed are helping out, you'll get points faster than if you were just spamming or sumthing those 100 posts. But note, the reason it's now temporarely by posts, is so that old-time people can get a fair Avatar first before the whole thing is changed to points (as they too start from 0 points).
As that's the only status people have currently, post-count.

However, in addition to forum-starters putting up rewards (and note, this reward does not come from them, it comes from the site, and are in the range 10-20 i guess). Moderators will be ordered to moderate threads even more, and reward people that are helping others and stuff.

You said the download section was up and running, but the "add comment"-function still isn't working.

And about submissions; what's the deal on updating them? I've now posted an update in the related forum, and will probably just post a comment-link under the old submission, but people downloading the update from a forum-thread is probably not getting me closer to getting rid of my critter-avatar now is it?
Perhaps a 'update' or 'edit' function at the download section would prove worthy?..

Alrighty, it sounds really good. However, I have two questions in relation to sigs:
1--Will only sig images cost points, or will any sigs changes end up costing points? I'm fine with images, as it will reduce people uploading huge files, ect., but I also don't want to have to spend a few points every time that I want to update my sig wtih new OH progress.
2--I kinda doubt this will happen, but would it be possible for hosted project teams to get project-related sigs at a reduced cost? Just wondering.

How does the "Attach Files" (to PM or Forum Reply) thing work now? I haven't been able to figure it out. But I did see the "look at attachments" page in the User CP.

Erhm, when you post something, wether it be a thread or a post. Then in Advanced Mode, there is a button, below the text-box, that says "Manage Attachments". Just click it and you'll see some friendly userface.

The Attachments thingy in UserCP is not relevent, it just lists all attachments you've done.

Is_Freak... Huh? I don't even remember kharma ever even talking about sigs? Are you confusing it with Avatars?

So, I'm assuming this is all in effect now?
If so, then why does everyone still have 0 points? :)

If the whole system is going to be based on Moderators reading helpful posts, then... well, let's just say people won't get all of what they deserve, because the Mod's can't read every helpful post; remember, wc3campaigns, many of us do do other things. :(

He said the mods do it when someone's being helpful all around; thread starters give points when someone answers their question.

Cubasis40, look at the store nad one of Draco's earlier updates thread... sig images will eventually cost points. 5 points for a reduced, 20 for standard, ect.

This usually means you submitted this file more than once.
