Changing weapons of a Hero without editing the model

ok, I have some custom made weapon models I want to use on the demon hunter. Im alphaing out the dh's normal blades, and using the Blood Mage's sphere ability to attach the weapons to the DH. Is there anyway I can get the modeled weapons on the dh with simply uploading them and pathing them, without having to add the sphere ability to the dh?

Easiest way is to alpha the blades in the skin, then use special effects.

Yea that is kinda what im already doing.... I need a way to alpha out the blades and not have to use the special effects trigger. (The Blood mages sphere ability is the same thing is creating a special effect) If this is even possible...
