To determine the proper assignment of your path, follow this example:

Your max file is in the following directory.

\3dsmax\war3\mymodel\mymodelv1.01.max

Say it references two skins files:
\3dsmax\war3\mymodel\skins\skin01.tda
\3dsmax\war3\mymodel\skins\skin02.tda

When you export mymodelv1.01.max into a directory there will be three files there: mymodelv1.01.mdx, skin01.blp, skin02.blp

When you import these into War 3 World Editor, you will have something like this:

war3imported\mymodelv1.01.mdl
war3imported\skin01.blp
war3imported\skin02.blp

You need to edit these paths so they are as follows:

mymodelv1.01.mdl
skins\skin01.blp
skins\skin02.blp

That should do the trick.

If this doesn't work, then just make sure that when you create your 3ds file, all the corresponding .tda files are in the same directory as the .max file. Then after exporting the max into an .mdl, and then importing all the files into World Editor, remove all the paths.
i.e:
mymodelv1.01.mdl
skin01.blp
skin02.blp

Then save the map, create your custom unit, and you should be good to go.

I hope this helps.
