A request

I have been trying to get mere basic terrain down for around a week now. I'm not even talking tiles, just getting the land levels and cliffs and stuff....I literally cannot do it. The tools all work fine, but every single time I get to the point where I almost feel good about something, the entire thing seems to come crashing down. So, I come here, looking for inspiration. What I find is plenty of inspiration(ya'll kick ass.....can i say that?), and yet I still run into the same problem. And now, I have a request for anybody who would help me:

I need either a way to fix my problem when it comes to terraining, or for somebody to do a basic layout of a map. The map is supposed to be an AoS-ish map, 192x160, the entire map evil looking. As to the definition of evil looking, its really up to you, although I would rather like either a blighted-ish or outlandish map, but if you can cook something up better than that then please do.

I'd like there to be two lanes going from the lower left to the upper right, and two lanes off to either side of the map, for expansions. If you have played Tides of Blood, you'll quickly realize what I'm aiming at.

Feel free to flame or help, at this point I'm not sure which one I really deserve.

I had difficuly too when i first tried terrain that would look good from the game camera angle, the best advice i can give is get winmpq, or anyother mpq extractor and open up war3, and war3x in the warcraft program files, there you can extract maps from the game and study them closer, a good rule of thumb is paths tend to be lower than the surrounding terrain, you get more of an atmospher if your units are boxed in and low down
Also if you need an area of flat terrain, but dont want compleatly falter terrain, just overall eveness, use the noise toll then the smoth toll over and over just untill the ground has some texture left, giving it some shadowna and not leaving it an obvious eye sore

I have used the noise/smooth technique before, and it has worked decently enough. The whole boxing in thing is a new idea to me, though. Thank you for the suggestion.

Heres a neat little trick for you to use. First draw out your map on a piece of paper, then if you have a scanner then scan the paper and print it out on a clear piece of plasitc overhead paper. If you do not have a scanner just redraw the map in adobe or some other paint program. Then open up a new map, then do view entire map, then tape the paper to the computer screen. DO NOT MOVE YOUR HEAD OR THE PIECE OF PAPER! you must complete the terrain all at once! and do not move your head! this will most likly hurt alot after about 1/2 an hour, so take the pain or dont do it!

I have used this on my own maps to make perfect circles and if you take a picture off the internet near you can make a replica

Good luck map making!
