not nesseceraly (however u spell) lots of people never bother looking for a map protector unless they make a map which really needs to. i was lookin for 1 last nite cos im 2/3 way through a rpg and do not want people to cheat on it. that is the only reason i have had to anything else i hav made i leave unprotected i dont like protecting maps i prefer to just protect them useing WeUnlimited so that they cannot change the author and still can look at your triggers etc. otherwise how is the mapping community going to increase if new comers cannot view other peoples maps to learn off them |

just open it up in WinMPQ or whatever and delete the .wtg file, the put the war3.j file in a /scripts directory. It wont stop ppl from opening the map..but ur triggers will be gone when they do. and plus, doing this cuts down map size. |

1) The map protection method with involves deleting the War3Map.wtg files is very unsafe and unreliable. Don't use it. 2) DungeonM, there's a word I'd like you to hear: GLOBAL. That's the type of product Warcraft III. So, oddly enough, strange as it may sound, people in countries which don't have English as a native language can make maps. I know it's a hard concept to understand, but please try, because I really dislike flaming in my forum. -------------------------------------------------
Here is a link to an excellent map protector. The instructions are on the thread, and you'll be able to ask questions there as well. HeavyLocker |

I've used HeavyLock too, and it's worthwhile. 35263526, what about the war3map.wtg method is unsafe and unreliable? I'm curious to hear about your experience with it. |

The problem with the war3map.wtg method is that the only thing that's gone is the GUI triggers (as has been said earlier). It's really whether or not you care much about how well protected your map is. There have been plenty of instances of people stealing terrain and objects, and the triggers aren't gone, they're just in JASS (which can bite you in the ass if someone wants them badly enough). |

Why don't people look in the editing-toolz forum, anyways? o_O While i'm closing this thread down to close down the discussion of ethics and reasons of protection...cause it's a proofed point that these disc's always lead to flame wars. Anyhow, I still greatly reccomend you to release a "unprotected" version, which...I don't know? has just one critical thing missing? Like all the unit values resetted (not clearing the custom units though), or sumtin. So people can if they want check out this "open" version of your map, to see how some of the triggers work. While that's still hackable, it's harder (more work needed). Also keep in mind not to remove too many things from the open-source version, as that may make it more confusing too understand than else. Note that this would be a side-release, which is then not ment for playing (as it won't work) and is only for in-editor interest. The main release would then be a Heavy-Locked version of the original, with the added bonus of it's size-reduction and general protection. Cubasis |
