Editing Alpha channels in The GIMP

I just had to format my computer, and I don't have warez, so I thought I'd try using The GIMP because I heard it can edit alpha channels. My question is, how?

I'm not sure if there's a better way of dealing with it, but using the eraser tool does translate into alpha channel.
