Hi all. A little question for you, im trying to make a map but i would also like to use a few models from another game. Would it be easier to convert the models and animations into a file type that warcraft can use (which i have no clue how to do :\ ) or would it be easier to create my own model and animations (which i have no idea to do :\ ) |

I rather say make them yourself. You spare lotsa work and it kicks more ass doin them yourself ;). |

converting would probably be easier, but you can get a better likeness of what you actually want if you make it yourself. |

only certain model file types can be converted, most of the games have their own unique model file type that can only be imported into max with certain plugins (and that means that its not 100% supported by their companies, I.O.W chance to get a full model with animations into max from a game is rare (examples of games which are possible are of course Bioware's NeverWinter Nights (get it! its good ^_^ ), C&C Renegade, Doom 3d, Quake etc. Most will lack the ability to import animations though) Another problematic that might arise is that the models sometimes use a unsupported modifier in max (means not supported by the Blizzard engine). Examples are the flex and skin modifier in Max. In a short cup note: depending on the moddability of the game you wish to rip (yeah we call it ripping :> ), you can port models from another game to here. Its a good way to get yourself familiriased with the functions of the art tools etc, but if you are serious into CG art and models and wish to mod at a longer term (like mod for ut2k4 later on), I suggest to start a small learning curve at max. In case of ut2k4, you can grab the Maya PLE which is located on the sixth disc of the game. And if you got the dvd edition of the game, then it should be a snap with all those Video Training Movies. But if you are a casual gamer that wants to map once in a while for wc3, then I strongly suggest to find a bud or laddy to work with that models. Depending on what you want, respect him laddy, as skinning and modelling on qualitative lvl requires tremendous amount of time and expertise |
