A Tale Untold A Tale Untold mixes RPG, AOS and also a bit of ARCADE gaming together. You start off on a small trading outpost in a epic map of islands. Now you must gain "status" on the different races, and become a great captain. When you have high status, you can buy good ships and have more control of what the race you have chosen does. Features -- Different races On the epic map, there will be 2 big teams, pirates and neutral traders. By killing units from one of the big teams, you gain status in the other team. The different teams will be: 1: Royal Fleet (upper right corner, a sandy beach island) 2: Vikings (down left corner, a snowy cold island with small tents) The pirates and neutral traders are spread out over the map, and have more special rules; to become a pirate captain you have to have negative status in all teams, AND kill alot of neutral traders. You start off as a neutral trader. -- Thinking Computers Each race will, instead of the normal "AoS fighting" style where you constantly fight, send large attacks at other races. All races build ships in their shipyards, and when they gather enouf forces, they will start a full scale assault on a enemy race. When this happens, all players on that race will be signaled where the attack will be. The computer sends transports with an escort fleet to attack the enemy base, and once they reach it they will unload attack forces to attack. When you have high status on a race, you can even have an opinion of what the computer will do. -- Advancing from a simple fishing man to captain As noted earlier, you will start off with nothing but a small ship. And as you gain status by trading or fighting, you can buy new ships, hire better crewmans, and get a new proffesion (like pirate, fighter, trader). -- Moving your ship: Like in arcade games! In A Tale Untold you dont have to keep clicking and such to move. You use the arrow keys to move forward and turn, the ship automaticaly moves forward.... you cant stop a ship right in a storm without a anchor! -- Wind affects your ships movement The wind affects your movement, its not just moving up and down. Your movement speed is constantly changed by your angle toward the wind. And there is also a different depending on what ship you have: If you have a light sailing ship, you will barerly be able to move toward the wind (you have to cruise!), but you will gain a huge boost while moving with the wind. But if you have a heavy battleship, you can easily move toward the wind, but still not very fast. But at the same time, battleships barerly dont get any boosts for moving with the wind. And if you use a ship without sail, you can just guess what happens: the wind doesnt affect the ship at all. The sailing affection is based on the real way of sailing. -- Hiring crewmen In each harbour, there is a "bar" where you can hire crewmen to you ship. They all have their stuff to add to you ship: For example, the scout can see what way the wind is coming from, and the artillery master can increase your precision and speed with cannons. -- Advanced weapon system Instead of just clicking on which ship to shoot at, you buy different weapons to attach to your ship. If you for example buy "gunners" to stand and shoot from you ship, the gunners wil automatically shoot at incoming ships (you can choose which one to fire at by selecting). And if you buy cannons, they will fire at nearby ships. But cannons cannot fire forward; they can only fire when the target enemy ship is beside your ship. You can also buy boarding forces, which will unload when you match speed and move nearby a enemy ship. Depending on if the enemy ship has a defence force, the enemy ship will be captured after some time. When a ship is captured, you will take all his equipment and automatically sell the ship to the nearest harbour. -- Jumping of the ship with you captain! You can also jump of the ship if you are close to land, so you can walk around on land. The captain has some minor skills, and can also buy handweapons, such as a rifle or sword. This is mostly used to go and buy stuff, but you can also use it to defend from transported attack forces. -- Disabling ships When a ship reaches 10%, it is "disabled". A disabled ship cannot move, fire... it can't do anything but wait. The disabled ship will now float with the wind untill it reaches a island, or a ship finds it. All ships have small "lifeboats" which can be released from the ship on the captains command, but most times its a better idea to wait. If the ship reaches the enemy island, you will have a hard time: You and your crew will have to survive against the soldiers the enemy send toward you untill your team picks your up in their ships. Disabling a ship can, of course, being an advantage: When you have disabled a enemy ship, you can easily move in and board it. But the disabled ship can still defend itself against boarding partys. Well thats all i got right now All trigger work, abilities, units, events, computers will be made by me, Kejos. Terrain is made by Alowan and Zuspekt. Story and theme by Haraldir. Any suggestions or questions are welcome! Here are some screenshots of the terrain so far: |

damn that looks cool....it seems like it would be hard to do but if u can that would be awesome |

Well the terrain is more then 50% now, and the wind and movement is around 75% finished. Me and Zuspekt is currently discussing if we should add saving/loading triggers to the map. This would be quite cool in a map like this, as its much rpg like. First time you play, you migth get your first sailing ship.... and then next time you play, you load that captain and then you have your ship and can continue! |

Quite good idea, but how will you make the wind effects, isent that hard to make it work well. Else it look quite neat, specially the vulcano!!! |

Yeah the wind effects took some time to figure out how to make, but they are 99% finished. Every 0.01 sec the units movement speed is changed to a special calculation (cant post it, ppl could copy it), depending on the angle difference between a unit called "wind" and the ships angle. As soon as the terrain is finished (should be about next week) we will move all triggers to the "real" map and start working on the gameplay. |

[give no credit to me will you Kejos? Well, hi everyone, i'm the ideas guy, come up with a few 'poetic' lines, and i few in-game ideas, ideas for the teams etc. |

Yeah Haraldir came up with the name and is currently helping me with what the different races will be (something like saracens, thugs, royal fleet etc.). If you have any suggestions or questions about the storyline and races, just post and we'll see what we can do! |

can you show a picture of the biggest city....i love screens of cities they always look really cool, what u guys should have is one big neutral city where u start and where u can buy all sorts of upgrades for your heroes and boats.....also u should be able to name u boat....now that would be cool.......i would name it the USS stronger than batman, superman, and spiderman all put together. ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ |

lol. I might as well finish the other terrain or take whats there and make a cinematic. Anyway, cool idea. is there going to be any story to the map with interlocking quests? Or is it more or less an AOS with exploration? |
| 05-03-2004, 06:03 AM | #11 |
There will be no quests, as some players will allrdy know the quest, and can easily tell whats going to happen. It will be more like an aos (but with the thinking computers i wrote about) but with more "character-evolution". Ah and yes, you start in a small neutral island town, from where you have to travel to the different races if you want to join one. Btw... "USS" stands for "united space ship"... guess that would be alittle wrong =) but good idea naming it, thx |

Mmm, if this is a single-player-ready map (I can play it with all computer players and myself), I'll love it right off the bat! But pray tell, how will the captain's two "personal" attacks (rifle/pistol and sword/spear/club) work? And are there ship classes-to-upgrade-to yet? |
| 05-04-2004, 12:33 PM | #13 |
Well the game will be dependent of human players, playing offline would be alot like playing a AoS singleplayer... There wont be many quests, but it would still be some fun for those without good connection. I will NOT use different weapon models for the captain's different attacks, it will mostly be like adding abilities (like throwing grenades and such) or adding attack range so it looks like he can attack at distance. These weapons can only be used when the captain has left the ship and is fighting on the ground.... but i might add so rifles and other distance weapons can be used while fighting over ships aswell. I have added a new feature to the first post: The cannons you can add to your ship can only fire from the sides; you cannot fire forward. This is made by triggers that only makes the cannon attack if the target is within certain angles from the ship. |

Sounds like a nice Project! I just made this, witch was supposed to be an Orcish house, but looks more like a pirate hideout. Maybe you can use the idea, BTW, TFO 4 t3h w1n!111! =D |
