3ds Max 6? Gmax?

I am completely new to modeling, my friend got me into it and I've tried to make some models in Gmax/3dsmax 6. I couldn't figure out how to put the models into WC3 so I came here. There seems to be no tutorials on using 3dsmax 6, anything I can find tells me that 3dsmax 6 doesn't work and that I need to use 3dsmax 5 or lower. Does that mean using 3dsmax 6 for WC3 is a lost cause? There doesn't seem to be any Gmax tutorials either, is that also a lost cause?

I can make a model easy enough, but that seems to be the easy part. Could someone explain to me how I would use either gmax/3dsmax to put models into the game? I would like to just focus on doodads right now because they seem to be the easiest thing to do. I'm nowhere near the level to make a whole character.

Thankyou for listening, I would really like some info on what modeling program to use.

To my knowledge the wc3 art tools (required to convert 3dsmax files into .mdx) only work for 3dsmax4. Maybe they work for gmax too.

it only works for ax 4.* and 5.*, 3d studio max 6. will never work. Gmax has a exporter but that is buggy

For some reason which was never fully explained, Blizzard never took the few minutes to recompile the art tools under 3DS MAX 6.
It IS possible that their current production path meant that they are still using exclusively MAX 5, and haven'ty yet upgraded to 6 (as the number of licenses to pay for versus the benefits of upgrading to 6 don't exactly add up). Either way, only way to get it working under MAX 6 is going to be either petitioning blizzard yet again (much though they insist that the initial petition for the Art Tools had nothing to do with their eventual release) or finding someone who knows how to decompile the code and then recompile it under 6, which of course skirts many legal boundaries.

Not to mention the fact that people like that don't come along every day.

Good to see you're still active DraX, coming back to us any time soon?

Does anyone know where I can find 3Ds max 4/5?

If not

The file converter that I got from WC3C only opens once, then I can't open it again. Is that what you mean by its buggy? Is there a way to fix that?

So since the Blizzard art tools don't work with 3d max 6, does that mean that you can't convert it to .mdx? or is there another way? also what's the exporter for gmax and by buggy what do you mean?

After I close the File Converter and I try to open it again I get this error:

im sure if somebody (e.g kmk) can make a basic exporter, then they can edit the tools to fit with 3ds max 6?

Its amazing! My friend just taught me that Dex's exporter can be taken from Gmax and used with 3ds max 6!!! Does that mean 3ds Max 6 can be used to make models for WC3!!?!?! Cuz I just made one and you can view it in model viewer. I guess all those people were wrong.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention.

Anyway, do you have to uvw unwrap and animate before you convert the model to .mdx, or it doesn't make a difference?
